In one of the suggested vids (( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOXVn5_OKFw -- Dole Bananas Commercial )), do I recognize the actor playing the boyfriend as "Shingo Mama"? (S)He's one of my fave bits of nearly untranslatable Japanese culture... Sort of like trying to explain why "Hard Gay" is so funny...
I've seen a few of the Dole commercials, and yes, they're fairly inexplicable. From my studies of culture during my stay, I think the core of any commercial is simply to express the 'feeling' or 'emotion' of what the product offers you. That's why the beer commercials have people who overreact to the taste of the beer, for example.
Hard Gay? Yeah, that one is out of my league. I still don't get it.
