gosh now I need to go… catch up on tags and things I guess. \o/?!?! Sorry about that.
And a scene I ended up cutting, because seriously, much as I love it, I don't think it flowed well at all.
Hawk crouched at the throne, and focused on breathing. Demons made him uneasy, however long it was he was around them- no, worse the longer he stayed around them. They weren’t meant to stay in this part of the world for long.
“It would have been more fun if you’d played with them more,” Bigieu said, stroking his head. She shook her head, and sighed. “Still, I suppose it only stands to reason. A hawk goes for the clean strike, after all.” She pushed his head to look into his eyes. “But we can teach you otherwise, can’t we?”
Hawk closed his eyes, let his secondary senses come to the forefront. “I serve to the best of my ability,” he said.
“Hmm,” Bigieu said, giving him a sharp look. She smiled, and if he’d been looking he might have seen the knives in her expression. “We’ll see how far that goes. How much we can teach a hawk to play,” she hummed, pulling his head into her lap and massaging, pricking him only on occasion. He’d learned to flow with it by now, though, and winced only when she made a deliberate point of it. “It would be such a shame to let all of that go to waste,” she murmured, taking his ear between two fingers. “Don’t make me lose interest in you.”
“I’ll learn to sing,” Hawk promised, turning his head to the side. “So beautifully, you’d swear I should have been a nightingale.”
Bigieu laughed. “How sweet of you!” she cried. “But you know-” Her claws touched his neck, and Hawk stiffened. “There’s only one man for me,” she whispered.
Her claws slid away from his neck, and he breathed again, letting his head drop. He put his hand over his heart. “Well, my lady… I can promise you, with all my heart, that I will never try to draw you away from him.”
She combed his hair with one hand, leaving faint trails behind. “Oh, I don’t need you to promise me that,” she murmured. “Just serve. That’s all I need.”
