Dmitry Medvedev sent a message to President of the Council of Ministers and Council of State of Cuba Raul Castro on the 56th anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack, which launched the start of the Cuban Revolution.

The President’s message said, in part:

“It is important that relations between our two countries are continuing their steady growth today. We seek to continue work on promising joint projects. The Russia-Cuba Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation has a leading role to play in this process.”

In Mr Medvedev’s opinion, “we need to continue expanding our cooperation in high-technology and innovation sectors such as the biopharmaceuticals industry, and work on establishing joint enterprises and production.” The President also named cooperation in the electricity, infrastructure, transport, and communications sectors as priorities. Mr Medvedev expressed readiness to support Russian companies working in Cuba’s oil and gas sector.

The message was delivered to Mr Castro by Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, currently on a visit to Cuba.

Dmitry Medvedev sent a message to President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega giving an assessment of the present and future prospects for Russian-Nicaraguan cooperation.

Mr Medvedev noted in his message that, following the Nicaraguan president’s visit to Russia last December, relations between the two countries have gained new impetus and the first practical steps have been taken towards an agreement on building a mutually advantageous long-term partnership.

The President said that the exchange of views at intergovernmental level is giving an added boost to the whole range of ties between the two countries, especially in the trade and economic sectors.

The message was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who was on a visit to Nicaragua.
