bliteotw What a fucking day so far.
I don't know whose left to see this, but you never know.
It became obvious pretty quickly that it was spreading to the coast. Not a surprise; there was a rumor that the Navy or the Coast Guard was taking people out on boats to escape. So of course a fucking flood of people comes in, and of COURSE some of them are infected.
My cell phone was already dead--I didn't realize that. Luckily, I got a message from my mother that she and my dad are blockaded at the hospital; there's an old bomb shelter around there, and she had luckily driven Dad down for an appointment anyway. She's been frantically emailing me, and trying to call obviously, but the phones around here go out pretty quick. I'm surprised we still have internet, to be honest. Power's sketchy.
I didn't get my car very far--I threw a few things in the back, but its only a few blocks to a lot where there's been a very cool sort of jacked up humvee for months. It wasn't much to make the switch, and I'm glad I did.
I was afraid to drive too far into the woods; where there's people, there's zombies, but where there's me alone, there's a dead me. So I headed for the lake road.
Which is about where I ran into Niki and Jake. I took the lake road ad saw them with their big truck full of supplies. We joined up pretty quick and of course the first thing we had to do was head towards work to see if anyone was alive.
The answer was no. Or so we thought. When we got there, the entire afternoon crew was still shambling around in their green aprons. It was surreal, this Starbucks of the Living Dead, with some of the same usual customers staggering around the lobby. It was like they were trying to cling to the outline of life, which was really sad. But they're still zombies all right, no doubt about that. I mean, as soon as they realized there were living there, they started coming for us. Ivan and Danielle were both really, really fast coming at us, which was scary--we hadn't dealt with any of the fast ones yet. But just as we were starting to fight, Erin popped up, looking pretty beat up but still making a lot of sense. I thought maybe she'd just been infected, because she definitley didn't look normal, but she was still with us. But they left her alone. With her help, we got them herded into the little alcove between the stores, where the bathrooms are.
Once that was over, Erin told us that someone had bitten Danielle in the drive through, and that before they knew it, it was spreading like crazy. Cayla and Heather just barely got out (knowing them, they got out with style) and I think they're together with their families. I hope they're okay. It looks like Erin got bit too, but she seems to be sort of semi-immune. Maybe this is where some of the smarter zombies are coming from? She clearly has a bite mark, but it already looks old and she seems mostly fine. Every now and then she sort of lunges at one of us but she always claps a hand over her mouth and says sorry. She's pretty understanding that we're keeping here kind of tied up to be absolutley sure.
So, then we headed up to the north end of town to see if we could find Kendra and James.
Well, up off of Highland, it was a damn massacre. We had to slaughter everyone on Higland drive...although there was a very brief argument when Scott came lurching down towards us. Niki was magnificent though, she took a shovel and whacked his head right off. Just like that. I mean, we were all cheering when we took one out, but we went crazy when she did that. Kendra and James were both already infected, which was pretty awful. It looked like James had gone down a hero though, because he was barely recognizable as human. I think they must have really torn the fuck out of him. Kendra looked pretty much okay, but we knew what we had to do. But Erin started yelling that she could understand Kendra, and not to kill her.
It may sound stupid, but we let Erin loose, and she went right up to Kendra and just sort of LOOKED at her, and boom, she stopped coming for us. Erin begged for us to take her with us, even if she was infected. It wasn't a long argument; we just tied her up good (and tied Erin back up, which she's still taking well) and kept them both in the back of Niki's truck.
So now its me, Niki, Jake, Erin and Kendra all cavalcading around a little. We're staying in motion because none of us want to get trapped. We've seen a couple of survivors here and there, but no one we could get to. We've seen a lot more people we know among the lurchers. Seriously, I'd say that 90% of the town is infected. The looting didn't get far before they couldn't keep going, so we've had a fairly easy time getting in and out of places gathering supplies.
I haven't heard from Chip in a long time, but he said he'd get here, and I just know he will. He sent a message that he was leaving hours ago. I'm hoping he's just too busy to write, so I'm going to keep posting when I have a moment and a connection. At the moment, we're near the middle of town, just north of the D river, not far from the overturned semi. Babe, if you read this, come find us.
Oh, and I've started smoking again. Fuck this.
