Computer Cables

Oct 24, 2009 10:53

I need to order a few cables, but I'm having trouble, since I have no idea what the cables are called. I'm hoping that someone who knows a little more about hardware can help me. They are the type of cables you would find inside a computer to transfer data. One is five wires, side by side, and has white plugs at the end. It's sheathed in a light ( Read more... )

Transfer data? As in from a hard drive or optical drive to the motherboard? In what kind of machine?

Sorry, that was really inexact. They're wires for hooking together circuit boards. There are plastic mounts on the circuit board with five or six pins in them, and the cables plug into there.

It's for a video game arcade stick.

I think it should be obvious here that I have no idea what I'm doing. This is really my first time messing around with hardware.

Hmm. If I had to guess I'd say there are no standards for things like that and they're all manufacturer in-house connectors. At least when I encounter situations like this in the lab my first move is usually to rip off the current mounts, find a manual for whatever was behind them, then make my own, usually really ugly looking, in-house connector.

Yeah, that's what it seems like.

Basically, I'm replacing one of the circuit boards in the stick. The new circuit board doesn't have the PCB connectors, it has screw in mounts for the wires. I could just chop the PCB connectors off of one end of the cables that I have, but I'm afraid that the new board might not work, and I want to keep the old board as a backup. I was hoping I could just buy some new cables to destroy, but it doesn't look like that will be easy.

Okay, so they're PCB connectors, but I have no idea what kind.

If you're specifically asking about your stick, why not ask at SRK? There's a megathread about modding the Madcatz sticks specifically.
