Personality:

Akane is the exemplary Clustanian citizen; she lives by the motto of “proud nationals of Clustania, calm and dignified, their minds as vast as the blue skies. Never self-effacing, nor arrogant, always being true to their true being” and she behaves accordingly. So when you first meet Akane in the game, it’s no surprise that she appears cold; ruthlessly leading the Clustanian Army to “cleanse” human settlements on the Great Fang, calm even in the face of a crisis, resourceful at improvising new plans to strike back at her enemies and focused on her duty as the Supreme Commander to the point that she even threatened to strike down her closest friend for being with the rebels of the Great Fang Coalition and betraying Clustania. Throughout the first half of the game, she will always admonish Finnel for helping humans and expresses her bewilderment at why her friend chooses to trust them, when throughout their lives, reyvateils of Clustania are taught that humans are untrustworthy savages.

In addition to that Akane was a reyvateil designed specifically to be goal-oriented, so she takes her duties very seriously. She always carries herself with a stern air, and speaks in a polite and formal manner. She doesn’t easily forgive mistakes and even demoted another reyvateil multiple times in the course of the game for continually failing to complete her task. She strictly abides by Clustanian laws and follows her orders to the letter, always calculating the most efficient way to carry it out, regardless of the method or how brutal it might be. Wasting time on frivolous things is something that she sees no point in doing, so even during those very rare times when she’s “relaxing” at home, her “hobbies” include training and reading encyclopedias, treaties and academic theses; possibly to even further her knowledge to aid her hometown and increase her efficiency as its military commander.

Regardless of her accomplishments, Akane isn’t a self-important or arrogant person, nor does she truly look down on others. She’s even uncomfortable with accepting compliments for doing things that she considers to be her duty. She abides by the code of justice and honor and, in fact, frowns upon unsavory people who bullies, betrays or does look down upon other people and will try to defend the victim. In terms of humans, while she does consider them lesser, it’s only because of her upbringing and the borderline racist views taught to her throughout her life, so she does sincerely believe that the “inhumane” things Clustanian reyvateils does to humans are for their own good and the stability of the Tower. However, since meeting Aoto and as she works with him and his party later in the game, Akane learns that not all humans are bad, and is slowly, but surely learning to trust them; changing her views about them far enough that she eventually willingly went to cooperate with them to ward off the Antibodies’ attack and actually considers Aoto’s idealistic views of reyvateils and humans peacefully coexisting.

Although Akane was also designed not to physically display emotions, that doesn’t mean that she’s without them, or that she’s as aloof as she’s initially portrayed in the game. For all her strictness and some of the cruel words she says to Finnel, Akane cares for her childhood friend deeply and her scolding of her was done mostly with Finnel’s best interest in mind from Akane’s point of view. In contrast to how she treats her subordinates, Akane is lenient with Finnel and even tries to give her chances to redeem herself and protect her whenever she could. Eventually it’s revealed that another reason Akane was doing her best to perform her duties to the point of being coldblooded was because her superiors promised to find a way to save Finnel’s life, so despite her fierce loyalty to Clustania, she was willing to go against her orders when she learned that her superiors were lying about the cure for Finnel’s condition, and that following their instructions will in fact cause Finnel to lose herself, even if she would technically still be “alive” as another person. The fact that she would risk her own life, her career and reputation to help her friend speaks volumes about the amount of affection she has for Finnel and how important she is to her.

Another important relationship to Akane is the one she has with her familiar Kukuro, an Antibody that was given to her since she was young and grew up with her. They have a mutual trust with each other, and even when Akane eventually learns that Kukuro was given to her only in order to deceive the Archians into believing that she’s the Antibody Head, she still refuses to give up Kukuro because she considers him to be her partner and cherished friend.

[ When the video on the PokeGear clicks on, it displays a girl with a stern expression. ]

Excuse me. My name is Akane, I am the Supreme Commander of the Clustanian Army and I would like to ask for your assistance. I am… new to this world and while I have tried my best to familiarize myself with this new setting as well as my unfortunate situation, I was hoping that someone might be able to provide me with more information about this world than what was provided in this book.

[ She holds up the trainer’s handbook to emphasize. ]

I would greatly appreciate any help, and while I am unsure as to what would be considered a fitting compensation for your time, I shall endeavor try to repay you in any way I can.

[ She pauses briefly, as if considering something, before she adds:]

…if possible, I would also like some recommendations on the closest area I could travel to for a Dratini’s food.

Third Person Sample:
The situation Akane was in was a curious one. One minute she was certain that she was in her home, hoping for the safety of Finnel and her comrades, and wishing for their success in their quest to restore the planet after they came to see her and bid their farewells, and then the next, Akane somehow finds herself waking up in a strange room in an unfamiliar house. Not being one to panic, she decided to investigate, only to be surprised with an even more bizarre situation where a stranger claims to be her mother.

Of course, Akane knew it was impossible, because like all the Pureblooded Beta type reyvateils in Clustania, she was created, not born like a third generation reyvateil would be. More especially when the mother isn’t another reyvateil, but a human like the woman in front of her. However the woman continues to act so… nice and affectionate towards her, that Akane finds her situation all the more difficult. As Akane herself wasn’t exactly the most adept at socializing and considering emotions, she wasn’t quite sure how she could relay the truth without damaging the woman’s feelings. So all she could do was uncomfortably stare at the woman while she tried to consider an appropriate response.

She wasn’t sure if she should be thankful or not when her “Mother” ushered her out of the house and told her to go see a “Professor” before Akane could come up with a reply.

Perplexed as she was, Akane still did as she was told. This was the only lead she had so far, and it didn’t hurt to follow it. She didn’t expect that the truth of the matter would be even more bizarre than anything she could anticipate.

As it turned out, she was no longer in Ar Ciel, but a strange world with creatures called “Pokemon”, after a few more introduction to the world, she was given a pokemon of her own and was sent on her way to start a journey to become a “trainer”. Hence, why she is currently in the middle of the road, studying the creature that was apparently her new “partner”.

The pokemon looked nothing like Kukuro. Where Kukuro looked like a small monkey, Dratini looked like a small serpent. While Kukuro would float after her, Dratini would slither. Kukuro could transform and use deadly attacks, but all her new pokemon could do was leer or wrap around its opponent. She could trust Kukuro to watch her back, but she couldn’t confidently say the same for this new partner.

And Akane wasn’t sure this was a change she was comfortable with.

But she didn’t have many choices, did she? She was alone in a new world, without her weapon or song magic and she has to survive. Mulling over or complaining was a waste of time and wouldn’t do her any good, when she could be traveling to investigate and possibly find other ways to get to Ar Ciel. Andin any case, compared to the dangerous situation her friends are most likely going through right now for the sake of their planet, this problem of hers probably couldn’t be considered as huge an obstacle. So Akane makes a decision there to persevere and do her best to complete her journey in this world in order to be able to return in time to welcome her friends back from theirs. It will be her goal, and if anything, Akane was an expert when it came to following and accomplishing goals.

With this determination in mind, she beckons her pokemon to follow her and begins her journey out of New Bark town.
