Who: Yumichika and Orihime
What: Fluff, Gossip, Cookies, Cute Waiters, and Awkward
Where: A Café and Orihime's apartment
When: Thursday Aug 23
Why: Because Yumichika wanted to treat Orihime to lunch and chit chat.
Yumichika arrived outside Orihime's door, glad to escape the rampaging Mizuho who had been impeding on his and Ikkaku's ability to pack. Not that they had much to pack or anywhere to move to, but hopefully after lunch they'd have luck searching for a place.
Orihime opened the door with a grin. "Hi, Yumichika-san! How are you?" She stepped back to invite Yumichika in. "Do you want to go out to eat or do you want to eat here?"
"Hello, Orihime-chan." He smiled and probably even sparkled. "I was planning to take you out to eat," Yumichika said.
"Oh! Thank you!" Orihime bounced slightly. "Let me just get my bag, then, and we can go!"
"All right." Yumichika waited for Orihime to grab her bag, amused at how excited she was, but then she often was. It was one of the things he really liked about her.
Orihime sling her bag over her her shoulder and pulled the door shut, locking it behind her. "So!!! Where are we going!"
"Wherever you'd like to go," Yumichika said. Mostly because he didn't know what many of the restaurants in Karakura were.
Orihime thought for a moment, pressing a finger to her chin. "Well...what sort of food do you want? There's a cute little cafe around the corner..."
"Cute?" Yumichika pondered a moment before agreeing. "A cute cafe sounds just perfect."
Orihime nodded and led the way down the stairs of the apartment and around the corner to the little cafe. "There's outdoor seating, like in Paris!" she said with a grin.
Yumichika followed, eager to see the cafe. "Are the waiters cute?" He wasn't concerned so much for checking them out, but having eye-pleasing wait staff would make the meal more palatable.
Orihime giggled. "Yes!!! They're very cute."
"Good." Yumichika laughed, too. They rounded the corner and arrived at the cafe, and sure enough it was very cute. So cute that Yumichika was sparkling with glee.
Orihime talked to the hostess and got them seated in one of the outdoor tables. "Thank you so much for taking me out, Yumichika-kun!" she said, unfolding her napkin and gently placing it across her lap.
"My pleasure, really," Yumichika replied, sitting down and fussing with his napkin. He noticed a slight blemish on his fork and called a random waiter over asking for a replacement. "So, how are things with you?"
Orihime smiled softly. "Things are good! How are you?"
Yumichika thought for a moment before answering with a smile. "Things are really good right now."
Orihime's smile widened. "I'm glad! You sparkle when you're happy."
"I know," he tried to say modestly, his grin large with a slight blush to his cheeks. And of course, Yumichika was sparkling.
Orihime giggled. "How do you do that?"
"Natural talent," Yumichika replied. As much as he liked Orihime, he was not about to give out his secret - otherwise everyone might be sparkling as much as he. There was no way he'd allow himself to be outshined.
Orihime nodded reverently. "It's very impressive."
"Thank you," Yumichika said. The waiter arrived - a very cute one at that - and took their orders. As the waiter left, Yumichika let his eyes follow for a brief moment before asking Orihime, "Anything new or exciting going on?"
Orihime shrugged. "Not since the festival, really. Uryuu's father has started talking to us a lot which is weird, but other than that..." she shrugged again. Brightening up a bit she turned to Yumichika. "What about you?"
If it were possible to sparkle too much, Yumichika would be guilty of it. "I confessed to Ikkaku."
Orihime bounced in her seat, grinning. "Really!? That's wonderful!!! How did it go??? What did he say???"
The excitement from their table had the attention of most of the cafe and several passers-by. Yumichika was oblivious to this. Mostly. "It went well." He looked like he was about to float away on his sparkles. "He was very happy that I told him."
Orihime clasped her hands together and nearly sparkled herself. "I'm so happy for you! That's so wonderful! Congratulations!"
Yumichika reached across the table and grabbed her hands, unable to contain his excitement. Sometimes, he really deserved to be teased about acting like a girl. "It is! Thank you! Now we just have to find somewhere else to live. Asano's sister is not happy about this at all. She had her sights set on Ikkaku."
Orihime gasped. "Really??? Oh my. Do you know where you want to live now?"
Yumichika nodded, "Really. And no, we've no clue where. We're going to look this afternoon."
Orihime beamed. "There are a few apartments available in my building, if you want to look there!!!"
"Are there? That would be great." If they could get an apartment in Orihime's building it would save having to search all over town.
Orihime giggled. "We could be neighbors!"
"We could!" Yumichika giggled laughed.
The cute waiter showed up and delivered their food, and Orihime clapped excitedly. "This look delicious!"
"It does," Yumichika replied, delicately digging into his meal.
Orihime hummed happily as she ate, pausing every so often to softly dab at the corners of her mouth with her napkin.
Yumichika ate quietly, the various waiters catching his eye every so often and distracting him momentarily. he couldn't help but admire beautiful things.
Orihime was all but oblivious to the waiters as she concentrated on her food, getting momentarily distracted by the ring on her left ring finger instead.
Yumichika noticed her eyes on the ring and smiled. "You're really excited about that, aren't you?"
Orihime grinned, blushing prettily. She nodded, gazing at the ring.
"Have you told anyone else?" Yumichika asked before finishing the last bites of his meal.
Orihime coughed nervously. "Just Shishido and Rukia-chan." She lowered her voice and leaned across the table. "It's supposed to be a secret."
Yumichika nodded. "Of course, I'll protect it as though it were one of my own."
Orihime smiled. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Yumichika smiled and motioned for the waiter. "Did you want dessert, or did you want to go?"
"Ooh!" Orihime bounced. "I made cookies earlier this week, if you want to come over to my apartment for dessert?"
"That sounds good." The waiter arrived and Yumichika paid the bill. Standing up he offered Orihime his hand.
Orihime grinned and took Yumichika's hand. "Thank you again, for lunch. It was delicious! And the company was even better."
"You're welcome. What kind of cookies did you make?" he asked as they walked back to her apartment.
Orihime swung their hands slightly between them. "Chocolate chip! And I followed the recipe exactly!"
Yumichika was still sparkling as they walked. "Chocolate chip are the best. With milk, right?"
Orihime giggled. "Yes! Of course! Abarai-kun and I had cookies and milk earlier this week too!"
"Abarai? He came over and bothered me the other day, trying to get some nonsense out of me. Apparently he's got something going with Kurosaki." Yumichika hadn't been sworn to secrecy with Abarai.
Orihime stopped walking for a moment. "...really?"
"Really." Yumichika replied, not stopping and practically dragging Orihime along.
Orihime hopped to catch up. "What kind of....thing???"
"The kind of thing Ikkaku and I have going." Yumichika thought for a moment. "No, I'd say it's probably more along the lines of what Envy and I had going for a minute there. Or possibly somewhere in between."
Orihime frowned. "I don't know what any of that means."
"Oh." Yumichika hadn't meant to confuse her. "I think they're something between boyfriends and friends with benefits."
Orihime nodded, but continued frowning, still sort of confused. "Oh. All right." She was quiet for a moment. "...I thought Kurosaki-kun..."
"It's just what Abarai told me. I haven't really been keeping up on other people's relationships." Yumichika responded as they walked up to Orihime's building.
Orihime took out her key and headed for the stairs. "Yeah...me either, I guess."
Yumichika followed her up the stairs. "It wasn't anything I expected from them."
Orihime was silent the rest of the way to the front door, thinking. Without a word she opened the door to her apartment and turned back to Yumichika with a fake smile to invite him in. "Milk and cookies, then?" she asked.
He could tell something was off about Orihime's smile. It always looked so genuine and right now it didn't. "Sure," Yumichika replied. He smiled back.
Orihime nodded and headed to the kitchen to pour two glasses of milk and prepare a plate of cookies. "You can make yourself at home and sit down at the kotatsu if you like, Yumichika-kun," she called from the kitchen.
Yumichika made a small sound of agreement and seated himself at the kotatsu. He looked around the apartment in amazement. "Your place is really big. Are they all this spacious?" he asked, hoping she could hear him.
Orihime walked back into the living room, balancing a plate of cookies and two glasses of milk. "Um...no. This one was magically enlarged." ^__^;;
"Oh. So Ikkaku and I won't be able to get one this size?" Yumichika sounded slightly disappointed.
Orihime placed the glasses and plate on the table and shrugged. "Not for the price we're paying. I think this one was one of the smallest ones in the building, originally, though." She sat down and reached for a cookie.
Yumichika reached for a cookie and bit into it, enjoying it's taste. However, Orihime's forced smile was still bothering him. "Were you upset about something when we got here?"
Orihime shook her head. "No! I'm fine!" She dipped the cookie into the milk and took a big bite. "Why?" she asked, mouth full.
"Your smile seemed different." Yumichika took another bite of cookie and followed it with a drink of milk.
Orihime sighed. "No, I'm fine. I was just thinking."
"All right." Yumichika wouldn't pry, especially considering he had no reason to think Orihime would lie.
However, sometimes Orihime just offered information without being asked. "It's just...I used to like Kurosaki-kun. So it's just sort of weird to think of him with someone else. Especially Abarai-kun, for some reason." Orihime stared at the plate of cookies for a moment, eyes glazed over, before coming to her senses, taking a cookie and taking a bite, blushing.
Yumichika pretended to be absorbed in his cookie as he thought over her statement. "I can understand that."
Orihime tried to change the subject, her face feeling hot for, as far as she could tell, no reason. "Have you seen all of Abarai-kun's tattoos??? They're amazing."
"Yeah, I have. Unfortunately all of them." Yumichika wondered why Orihime was bringing this up, but one look at her face and he laughed. "Why, have you?"
Orihime's jaw dropped a little. "ALL of them??? No, I haven't seen all of them. He showed me some, though." Orihime nibbled her cookie awkwardly.
"Well, I'd hope he wouldn't show you all of them." Of course it had been a while since he'd seen Abarai in the nude, it was possible he'd acquired more, but Yumichika didn't want to think about where.
Orihime giggled. "So they really do go all the way down?"
"Pretty much," Yumichika replied, blushing slightly as well, as he actively tried to remember what they had looked like. He'd blocked it out of his mind ages ago.
Orihime was silent for another moment, dipping a cookie into her milk until it was exactly the right amount soggy and took a big bite.
The silence normally wouldn't bother Yumichika, but with the last topic being Abarai's tattoos, it was unbearable. "These are really great cookies."
Orihime smiled. "Thank you!!! I baked a lot on Tuesday!"
"I'm not very good at baking, but I can decorate." Yumichika said. Not that anyone expected him to be good in the kitchen.
"I like cooking! It's fun!" Orihime said before taking a big gulp of milk. "It's not as fun to follow recipes as to make things up, but Uryuu doesn't like the things I make up, a lot of the time."
"What kind of things do you make up?" Yumichika finished his cookie and went for another.
Orihime shrugged. "I like to add things that I like to stuff. Red bean paste is good on almost anything! And I like spicy things so I add wasabi or hot sauce to lots of things. I also have sprinkles and gummy bears. I added those to one batch of cookies. But I wouldn't serve those to company. Last time I did that was the first time Uryuu came over to my apartment. He nearly choked!"
The things Orihime had just described did not sound beautiful at all. "I can imagine most would choke from that."
Orihime frowned and nodded. "Yeah. I guess so."
"But following the recipe, it's delicious," Yumichika smiled, sparkling slightly as he did so.
Orihime nodded again and took another sip of milk.
"So, how long has Ishida been living here with you?" It probably wasn't any of his business, but he couldn't help his curiosity.
Orihime grinned and held up one hand. "Five months!"
"That's impressive," he said. And it was for high school aged mortals. He'd more or less lived with Ikkaku for a couple hundred years, but the difference between their friendship over that time and what things were going to be like now that he'd confessed, made him slightly nervous, but an excited happy kind of nervous.
Orihime clapped her hands together and grinned even wider. "Thank you!!! And our one year anniversary is next month!"
"You going to do anything special for that?" Yumichika sparkled.
"I don't know!" Orihime bounced slightly. "I think Uryuu is planning something, but I don't know what!!!"
"I'm sure whatever it is, it'll be great." It made Yumichika to see Orihime back to her usual bouncing happy self.
Orihime sighed, staring at the ring again. "I don't even care what it is, as long as I can be with him," she said, reaching for another cookie, and noticing that they were running low.
"I suppose that really is all that matters," Yumichika said, finishing the cookie in his hand.
Orihime nodded, nibbling at her own cookie. "I'm sorry that Uryuu isn't here. I'm sure he would've loved to have cookies with us."
"Maybe sometime soon Ikkaku and I can join the two of you for dinner." Yumichika thought this sounded like a wonderful idea, and hoped that Orihime would as well.
"I would like that very much!" Orihime grinned. She took another big gulp of milk, draining her glass, and stared at the last remaining cookie on the plate. "Would you like the last cookie, Yumichika-kun?"
"We could split it," Yumichika offered, picking it off the plate and making to break it in half.
"That's a great idea!" Orihime nodded, holding out a hand for half of the cookie.
Yumichika broke it in half and handed her the bigger half, not because he was being nice, but because the smaller half happened to look prettier. He smiled and took a bite of his half.
Orihime took a bite of her own half and chewed thoughtfully. "Thank you for inviting me to lunch, Yumichika-kun. And for coming over for cookies! This has been really fun!"
"No, thank you for accompanying me. It has been fun." Yumichika finished off his cookie and milk.
Orihime smiled and gathered up the dishes to bring them back into the kitchen. "Do you want anything else to eat or drink, Yumichika-kun?" she asked, standing and brushing crumbs off of her skirt.
"I'm fine, but thank you for the offer." Yumichika replied. "I should probably get going so that Ikkaku and I can look for an apartment."
Orihime nodded, and reached out a hand to help Yumichika up. "You should talk to my landlady before you leave! To see if there are apartments available that you'd be interested in!"
"That's a great idea, Orihime-chan. And if there are, I'll bring Ikkaku by to look at it, too." Yumichika smiled.
Orihime grinned. "Awesome! I hope you find something here. It would be fun to be your neighbor."
"I hope so, too." Yumichika stood up and stepped over to give Orihime a hug goodbye. "I'll see you later."
Orihime nodded and hugged Yumichika tightly. "Okay! See you later!" She walked over to the door and held it open for Yumichika to leave. "Good luck with your apartment search!"
"Thanks!" Yumichika waved as he stepped out of the apartment. He hoped that Mizuho hadn't tried killing Ikkaku yet. Especially considering he had to stop off to see the landlady first.
