Stuff Stuff Stuff (with pictures)

Last Saturday, the pharmacy wasn't very busy. I think it's because it is the summer, and most people are on vacation. Anyways, I had to find stuff to keep myself awake, so I played lego with Tylenol. Don't worry, I had gloves on!

While waiting for the glovebox today, I decided to take a stroll and visit the greenhouse because I haven't seen it for ages. I noticed that the cacti were flowering. Here's the one that I try to stay away from.

Don't be fooled by the fact that it's a flower, and the usual assumption that flowers are fragrant. This flower (as well as many other desert flowering plants) smell disgusting. They mostly smell like some sort of rotting material, be it rotting meat or fermenting crap. Flowers need to attract animals and insects to come to them and help them pollinate. In the desert, there are no butterflies or bees, there are only scavenger insects, and they run around the desert looking for dead things to eat. Thats why desert flowers smell like... well... death. A professor tricked me into smelling that flower when I was in first year. The memory of the smell from the flower still remains in my mind today.

To prove my point, observe the picture above. Notice how the flower has attracted the fly? These are examples of the kind of insects that help these plants pollinate.

I've updated my Chemo-blog with what I've been up to in the lab lately. Go there to see the update if you are interested. If you're a smart cookie, you'd know that I have a link to my Chemo-blog in my info page.
