So, we are at the local 4th of July fireworks display, and there are balloons being handed out somewhere. We have arrived right at dark, and the fireworks are expected to go off shortly, but Penelope wants a balloon. Daddy says no, he doesn't see where they're giving them away, but Penelope really wants a balloon.

After about five minutes of back and forth, with Penelope asking if maybe someone nearby will give her THEIR balloon, and me explaining that they probably want their balloons, she subsides and I think the conversation is over, until she comes up with this gem:

"Maybe we could find someone who's not paying attention to their balloon?"

The cunning criminality of the thought, juxtaposed with the artlessness with which she confided her intent to me, left me weak with laughter.

No, we did not "liberate" somebody's balloon - Heather found out where they were giving them away and asked nicely for one.
