i know, pretty much all i do right? but at least it's a meme that requires something resembling talking.
This came from firefly_124 on LiveJournal.
The rules are simple, if you're interested, leave a comment and I'll LJ stalk you to find THREE FANDOMS you apparently love. And then you answer these questions about them!
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
she chose Buffy, Magic:TG, and West Wing for me.
Buffy
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
honestly, i resisted this fandom for a long long time. I saw the original movie in the theater in grade school, and was absolutely certain that they were going to screw it up putting it on TV. goes to show what i knew! I don't think i actually started watching Buffy until season six - you know, after she died. that's probably why i don't have as much of a problem with Dawn as a lot of people that started at the beginning - she was there at the beginning for me.
anyway, i was on Napster and Grokster at the time, so i downloaded every episode and had them all watched in fairly short order. when i started watching, exactly, I'm not certain - it could have been earlier. but I'm fairly certain it wasn't long before the musical - which is what really pulled me in. oh, and my parents and godfather (who lives with my parents) were all watching it, which is why i saw enough to get pulled in in the first place.
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
well, it's been over for about as long as it existed, and I'm still here. i mean, i even recently found a new Buffy archive and am reading stuff by new people. i don't think I'll be going anywhere any time soon. plus, Spuffy smut? to hot to leave.
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
um . . . damn, it's that favorite thing again. i always have trouble with that. a list of (many) favorite episodes, in no particular order: Hush (S4), The Body (S5), Something Blue (S4), Once More With Feeling (S6), Conversations with Dead People (S7), Tabula Rasa (S6), Chosen (S7), the one i can't remember the name of in S4 or S5 where Faith switches bodies with Buffy . . . i know there's more, and I'll probably beat myself about it later.
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
define participate . . .
i don't draw, or at least not anything that looks like people or objects that i allow anyone to see. i haven't written fanfiction in years, and in any case have never written Buffy fanfic (mine's all anime based, mostly Ranma). I'm not really in any communities of people that do anything with it. mostly, i just watch the show, watch fanvids, read fanfic, and that's it.
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
um . . . maybe? there's a lot of people here already, though i certainly wouldn't mind if more people did.
Magic: The Gathering
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
My parents started playing M:TG with the Unlimited edition, i believe. i know i have a few Unlimited cards, and my dad has some Alpha and Beta. they're probably worth a pretty penny now. in any case, i was a kid (as in, barely in the double digits in age), and my parents and all our family friends were playing, so i wanted to as well.
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
mostly already have moved on. I've never much been in the greater Magic community, though i was involved in Magic club in junior high (we actually bought the Latin teacher some cards and taught him to play so that he could supervise the club) and spent a really obscene amount of time at the local comic shop in high school - but I've never done tournaments, and I've never been involved in the online community. Mostly, I'm not even doing that anymore. I still have all my cards, and I'll occasionally play (with my boyfriend, or my dad, or random people at the local gaming convention), but I'm not really tied to it anymore.
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
hehe, doesn't really apply to Magic. i can say that my favorite cards in my current deck are Mana Flare, Conversion, Sunglasses of Urza, Library of Leng, and Howling Mine. for those paying attention, yes, that means i play a red/white deck with a white card that turns all my mountains into plains, a red card that makes lands produce an extra mana each time they're tapped, an artifact that allows me to use white mana as though it was red, and cards that allow me infinite hand size and to draw extra cards in each turn. the bigger thing here? i have 4 of each of these in my deck. and Fireballs. :)
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Nope.
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
I think it's a great, complex game. i think it's gotten needlessly over-complex in the last 10 years, which is part of why i dropped out of it a bit. it's probably going to be difficult for a new person to get into the game with any reasonable speed. on the other hand, it does require thought, forethought, and critical thinking - and most of the population would be better off if they did these things a little more often.
West Wing
1) What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I think i caught some of it on regular TV (well, tapes - because my parents tape the world and watch it later. though now they TiVo the world and watch it later.), but i mostly got into it when i could just sit down and watch it all in a line. i made a BIG crocheted blanket for my dad for Christmas one year - i think i watched all of Buffy, Angel, and West Wing while making it. it's HUGE.
2) Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
Honestly, i've never been in the fandom. i'm a fan - but i don't talk to people about it, i don't think i've read any fanfic or watched any fanvids about it, and i don't sit and think about what else could have happened much.
3) Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
I loved the Matt Santos storyline in the last season - it was great. i adore the very first episode - the first time you see Bartlett is . . . well, interesting. I love the storyline between CJ and the reporter guy whose name is slipping my mind at the momment, and the way it goes from the very beginning to the very end. I loved when Bartlett asked CJ to jump off a cliff. I love the relationship between Josh and Donna. I love the way the series keeps a plot piece or arc going through the whole series without making it feel forced. also, another specific episode i love - Isaac and Ishmael, the one slipped in at the beginning of season 3 in response to 9/11.
4) Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Nope.
5) Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Honestly, i'm not sure. i think everyone should see it, and think honestly and critically about the issues it brings up, but asking people to be in fandom for it is a bit much i think.
so - there's mine. if you want me to, i'll do it for you - but i don't expect much.
