My Crazy Kids

Mica has very distinct preferences sometimes. He would rather wear pajamas than anything else, expect perhaps hats and gloves. Gloves are particularly cool, cool enough to make up for the fact that they render his hands largely useless. Chanting is fun, especially if he gets to ring the bell. Music is nice, though it's better if he gets to push the buttons on the radio. Signing is okay, but words are where it's at. He also already has favorite books: Goodnight Gorilla, Pat the Bunny and Go, Dog. Go! That last one is actually a little long for him, but he does like it because is involves his favorite thing ever--Dogs!

Mica is obsessed with dogs. Real dogs, toy dogs, pictures of dogs. When he sees one he will pound his belly, pant and say daduhg--just in case we missed it. Stuffed animal dogs are the best--unlike the cat which is all too likely to beat a quick retreat--toy dogs are perfect for hugging and kissing and pushing around in laundry baskets. While he likes all of the stuffed dogs in the house, he has definitely adopted one of them as his lovey--to the point that he woke up in the middle of the night asking for the dog instead of me.

I've watched his growing attachment to this particular stuffed animal with mixed delight and dread. Delight because it is really nice to have something that is guaranteed to make him happy around riding in the car. Dread because the stuffed animal is Kay Dog, an animal significant enough to Raine to rate a name. Granted, Kay Dog has never been the reigning queen of Raine's menagerie but she certainly has been part of the royal court. Raine has not complained about Mica playing with Kay Dog, or dragging her around the house and in the car and such, but I figured it was only a matter of time before Raine decided to exercise her rights of ownership on Kay Dog, which would I think end badly for one or both kids.

But then last night, while Raine was talking on the phone with Nana about her up coming birthday, she said that she would like a stuffed animal dog as a present because, "I gave Kay Dog to Mica." I was stunned, and delighted, though I shouldn't have been so surprised. Raine isn't stupid. She's seen Mica dragging Kay Dog around, and sleeping with him and everything. She can see that he's adopted the dog, and she's clearly made her own peace with it.

She is very observant and able to put pieces together in her head, often coming up with solutions that crack me up. A few days ago she was looking at a bowl that has a set of Disney princesses on it, and she complained about the fact that they looked like they were on land, but the mermaid was in her mermaid form--all good observations. She then said, "I know she's a mermaid because I can see her fish tail and her nipples have turned into shells."

And you know, she's right. It is every bit as plausible that the mermaid has breasts that are shells, as it is that she's wearing shells as a shirt--more so really considering how uncomfortable it would be to wear shells. It still cracks me up though...

And now it is time to start getting those kids into bed.
