Peaches! in October!

There are a great many things I like about living in Corvallis. Being close to friends is certainly a big one--we had a somewhat impromptu dinner party last night which was a ton of fun. And certainly I'm happier being closer to family (my mom and all my brothers made it up for our housewarming party a couple of weeks ago, which was a real treat) But I gotta say the local produce is also just fantastic.

I'd never really heard about the 100 mile diet (trying to eat only locally grown and processed foods) until I moved out here. In part because Corvallis is a delightfully hippie town, but I think also in part because a 100 mile diet is actually in the realm of possibility here. We frequented a local farm-stand/hippie store in Maine, and enjoyed the fresh local vegetables there, but the selection was somewhat limited and the growing season was very short. Today we bought fresh, spray free peaches at the farmers market. I'm just stunned and delighted. I mean there is nothing like enjoying a fresh juicy peach on a cool fall day--for the novelty if nothing else.
