Pain was simple. Aya could deal with it when it was himself hurting. When he could, he ignored it, when he couldn't, he just lived with it. But when it was others hurting, the people he cared for, it became difficult. Watching them suffer made him anxious, angry, helpless, and stressed.

This was the reason why he was knocking on Schuldig's door the night of the day when Sena had chosen to woke up. He had debated with himself over and over again when the kid had fallen asleep again. And still the same answer arose; something had to be done. It seemed painkillers were nowhere around, and Caesar's suggestion that Itsuki might be able to help was not really better idea than going to Schuldig.

He was perhaps even a bit surprised that the German had not already told him to stop chewing on the matter and just come clean with it; nothing else had occupied his mind in the last hour or so. It was reassuring to know Schuldig didn't listen to his thoughts all the time.

"Schuldig. I'll make us some coffee," he thought clearly after knocking on the German's door, then headed towards the kitchen. If the Schwarz didn't understand an invitation, Aya couldn't help it, there was little to be done with stupid after all.

Schuldig yawns a little as she steps out of the apartment. The reason for the lack of interruption was because she was half-asleep and trying to ignore him. She was a little put-out by the fact that she'd had a mild urge to actually OFFER to help without being asked. It was disturbing.

An offer of coffee was not to be turned down, however.

She wanders into the kitchen not too long after Aya, wearing a slightly over-large button-down men's shirt and nothing else. It was long enough to cover everything important, though her long legs were very much open for view and the top two buttons were undone.

Another yawn. "Coffee?" she asks hopefully.

Aya doesn't divert his attention from making coffee as he hears Schuldig come in. He concentrates on the mindless task rather bravely. The feminine voice startles him a bit, brows furrowing a little.

"Will be ready in a moment," he answers when he turns around to face her.

His eyes widen a bit as he stares at Schuldig, taking in her clothing choices for the night.

"I-- a-ah... You were sleeping?"

Schuldig smiles, leaning back casually against the counter. One hand pushes her slightly wilder than usual hair back out of her face. "Mmm, trying to. I wasn't quite there, though."

Aya's reaction is rather flattering. Schuldig is pretty sure there aren't many things that can make him stammer like that.

No, Aya doesn't stammer. And yet he did just now. Schuldig's less than orthodox attire has something to do with it, that's for certain. Not to mention that the man is now sporting a beautiful female body.

He doesn't apologize. Schuldig is quite capable of refusing invitations if he wishes so. Instead he leans back against the counter, folding arms over his chest and looks at Schuldig through the veil of his crimson bangs.

"To cut to the chase," he starts, studying the German. "I'd like to ask a favor." It takes a lot to say it. Aya just doesn't ask favors from Schuldig.

Schuldig stretches lazily, the shirt riding up a little to show more thigh. She's not above showing off for an appreciative audience.

"You want me to help the little kitten," Schuldig says, yawning behind her hand. "This is a 180. When he first got here you would have done almost anything to keep me away from him. Am I getting anything but your well-hidden gratitude out of this?"

If Aya mentions the implicit agreement to help in the phrasing of that last question, Schuldig will be Displeased.

Aya isn't surprised that Schuldig doesn't just roll over and give him what he wants. It's not how it works. He turns to pull out some cups for the coffee, to give himself something to do and to avoid looking at Schuldig.

"I doubt there's much I can do pay you back. But name it if there's something you want."

Schuldig laughs. She can't really help it. Aya ought to know better than to make such open-ended comments. She moves from the counter to a chair and drops into it, crossing her legs.

"Well, after coffee, the first thing that comes to mind is sex. I might be willing to take an 'IOU one favor', though, so I don't have to spend the next week listening to your monogamy guilt."

Aya shrugs, clonking the cups to the counter. He never said he'd do what Schuldig would ask, but the bargaining had to start from somewhere.

"I'm not a whore, asshole," he says coldly. Not now at least. He's not hypocrite enough to claim he's never sold himself for personal gain. He has killed for money, as simple as that, several times, repeatedly.

He pours the coffee into both of the cups on the counter, back rigid as he refuses to look at her for now. "How do you take your coffee?"

"Ach, if I wanted to call you a whore, I'd call you a whore. As it is, you're hot and I'm an opportunist and that's all."

It's just as well that Aya isn't looking, in Schuldig's opinion. It means he misses the bitter expression that crosses her face at his objection and his thoughts about killing for money. Killing for money isn't being a whore. Schuldig's done both and knows the difference.

"Black, three spoons of sugar."

Aya would disagree with her, if he'd know what she was thinking. He isn't exactly offended by Schuldig's proposal, it's something he could have expected from the German. But a tiny part of him feels betrayed. Who would have known he was capable of such emotions towards Schuldig.

"Your teeth are going to rot out of your mouth with that much sugar," he says but prepares her coffee like she wanted it, dropping just a hint of milk into his own cup. Then he takes the cups to the table and takes a seat opposite Schuldig after placing the cup right beside her hand.

Aya might consider the fact that she breezed past the idea pretty quickly. If it was something she was seriously expecting as a payment option, she wouldn't have. She's not going to say anything, though. Like hell is she going to defend herself even to him.

"That assumes I'll live long enough for it to become an issue, katzchen," Schuldig replies with a snort, picking up her coffee and taking a drink with a little purr. Not that she is admitting the possibility of an enemy being able to kill her. That's not her style.

Unfortunately, Aya's bound to easily think the worst when it comes to Schuldig. And belittle what they've hesitantly built between them here.

"At least you live with healthy mouth," Aya mutters. He's fully accepting the fact that probably both of them will be dead in just few years, if not earlier. Nothing else could be expected with their lifestyle. But that doesn't seem to be an excuse for not appreciating your teeth, not as far as Aya's concerned.

"So, you'll do it?" he asks as he directs his gaze to Schuldig, keeping it strictly at her face.

"I'd rather live happy than healthy," Schuldig replies fliply, settling an elbow on the table to rest her head on her hand.

She sets her cup down and drums her fingers idly on the table. Finally, she nods. "In return for one favor to be negotiated when I need to call it in, I'll do it. And no paranoid bullshit, blaming me if he acts funny or something. I'd be insulted as all hell if you dared to think I'd mess with him when you knew I'd been in there. I've got more subtlety than that."

Happy? The thought punches a shiver through Aya, and a series of flashing thoughts, too unfamiliar that he'd want to stay studying them, disturbing. He shrugs them off, feeling slightly awkward and shifting on his chair.

"Fine. That sounds like a deal." It amazes him how easily he gives into the agreement, which leaves him in depth to Schuldig. He hates owing anything to anyone, not to mention someone he should be considering his enemy. But for some reason, it's not really bothering him that much. Not enough to make him annoyed at least. "Thank you."

Schuldig squirms a little at the sudden high-speed slide show, grumbling something incoherent into her coffee as she picks it up to take another drink.

She makes a face when he thanks her, tapping a fingernail against the side of her cup. "Ach, don't do that. Thanks are for acts of kindness or payment-free favors, neither of which are things I do." Ignore evidence to the contrary. Most of the times it happened Schu wasn't herself. "We're just making an agreement of exchange."

Schuldig just isn't accustomed to being thanked.
