The good and the bad

My company has been paying us $2 extra an hour, but planned to end that on May 31. Then Costco announced that they would be ending their extra pay at the end of the month. There was backlash right away. That's why my company changed their policy. My supervisor was telling me about the change in plans. I then told her about Costco. She hadn't heard about it. Being shamed in the news changes everything. We are required to wear masks, gloves and an orange vests to take drive up orders to cars. It's been over eighty degrees lately where we live. Wearing all of this in the heat makes us overwhelmed. We are doing returns now along with drive ups. We have to wipe down returns or quarantine them for four days. We also have to answer the phones and make announcements ever half hour to remind people to stay six feet apart. So yes they are paying us a bit more, but they also cut our hours. I normally get over 37 hours a week. Now I have less than 30. I only get one 15 minute break each shift. So with wearing all the protective gear in the heat I am always tired and hot. It's stressing dealing with all the extra work. They give most of the hours to workers pulling the orders to fulfill them. They give them several hours to do their orders. When the guest shows up we only have two minutes to pull the order and get it to the car outside. Often we have a few minutes to pull the orders due to the guest letting us know they are on the way. Many don't give us any warnings. Some have as many as six orders to pull. We had an order of 28 cases of water once. Try loading that up and pushing it out under two minutes.

Management watched us on video to make sure we stay six feet apart. We are running around like crazy and sometimes you are closer than six feet. Some guests are difficult. One wanted me to come out to her car to do a return. Often I am doing a return, answering the phone and there is a drive up at the same time. They pull people from guest service to cover breaks, clean or bring in carts. Some days I have to sit down after clocking out because I'm too tired to walk to the car. So paying us an extra two dollars an hour really doesn't cover it when they cut our hours and expect so much to get done.
