I survived Black Friday pretty well. Was tired, but otherwise it wasn't too bad.
They had to change my original schedule because they set me to work on
Thursday night at 8:30pm till Black Friday morning at 4:30am. Wouldn't
have been a problem, but they wanted me back at 8am on Black Friday.
A seven and half hour shift with three and a half hours off till I was to go
back and work another eight hours. That wasn't about to happen.
Now Black Friday was busy, but most people were pretty nice.
We had some special deal that ran from 4am to noon. Some
people can't read ads or tell time it seems. If you purchased
a certain amount of clothing, appliances or domestics, you got
a free $10 gift card. Some video games, DVDs and video game
cards were on special prices, but you had to buy them at the right
time. We did not match online prices or other stores' prices for
Black Friday. The problem was the next day people wanted the
same goodies and didn't care about what the ad said.
All day Sat, people kept bugging me for the $10 gift card. They
couldn't understand it was only on Friday during a certain time
and for certain products. Not on toys or electronics and not on
Sat either.
People bought video games on Thursday night or Sat. and couldn't
understand why they couldn't get the price for Friday. One man
really ticked off management and me as well. In Friday's ad between
4am and noon, you could buy a video game card half price. He bought
80 of them. I don't know who sold them to him since we would never
sell that much of one product to one person at a time. He came back
on Sat and wanted more. I called a manager who told him no. The
sale was over and he couldn't buy more at that price. He went away
and came back in about an hour. Told me a manager said to sell them
to him at the half off price. I asked him what manager and he couldn't
give me a name. I called for a manager and all three on duty came
running. Our loss prevention guy showed up as well. They told him no.
He got angry and made a scene. He called our home office on his cell
phone. They told him he couldn't have it either. He yelled at them as well.
He demanded they talk to me or a manager at the store. They told him we
couldn't talk on his cell phone. Told him to call on one of our phones. We
have three at guest services. Instead he went over to the computers where
you apply for a job. They have a phone that call a certain number for help
on applying for a job. If you stay on it with out dialing, it calls our operator.
My phone ran and when I picked it up he called me by name. Guess he
thought he was being funny. I just hung up on it and told him he couldn't
use that phone. He called the home office on the right phone and they
told him no again. They hung up on him. He freaked out again. Demanded
to know when our Store Manager would be in again. I explained I don't have
his schedule and asked a manager. Well, our Store Manager's wife had a
baby last weekend so he was going to be out for at least a week. The guy
finally left without his video game cards.
When I left Sat, we had at least 15 carts of reshop to be put away.
On Sunday, we still had that many. I came into two shopping carts
of damaged stuff to deal with on Monday. Then the guy from
groceries brought me a cart of Hostess baked goods to damage
out. If you don't know about it, Hostess went out of business.
They were the company who made Twinkies and other snack goods
along with breads. I worked on that cart of Hostess all day between
guest returns. The guy from groceries said he didn't have time to
bother with it and that I had to do it. My supervisor came in just as
I was leaving for the day. She told me he had brought it up the night
before and she refused to do it. Told him it was his to damage out.
Boy was I pissed to find that out.
And no, I didn't buy a single thing on sale for Black Friday.
