The highlights of the episode for me were the whole San Pedro scene from the point when Esther became a badass on through Ralph shooting Maloney, and the Gwen and Jack bit and Gwen being amazing and leather-clad and driving away from explosions. And Esther is the first highlight I think of, honestly, because that fight scene is the most impressed I've been with her so far. I've grown fond of Esther, but the girl is awful at lying, and I was cringing through most of her scenes this week in fear that she was going to be found out, so it was nice to see her suddenly being a badass with a new facial expression. Even though my heart broke for her the next second.
Bonus highlight was everything with Rhys, basically. Particularly how attached Gwen and Rhys have grown to the point of all these very open-mouthed public kisses even in the middle of emergencies, but also just Rhys doing whatever Gwen asks of him without questioning her. Gwen is the one who signed on to everything that comes with being a part of Torchwood; Rhys just got pulled into this life because of her. But he loves her and wants to protect his family so much that he tackles Torchwood-esque tasks with a level head now, and I love that. He took that to a whole new badass level tonight. And I just love Rhys a whole lot more now than I did earlier on in Torchwood, partly because it always gets better when a character finds out what the main character they're close to has been hiding from them, and partly probably because the more original characters we lose, the more attached I grow to all those who are left. I even get excited for Andy now.
My only other comment on this week's episode is that I missed Jilly. I can definitely handle a week without Oswald (not that he's a bad character - he's interesting and he definitely makes for good television, it's just that it's hard to watch, but that's Torchwood for you), but I need more of Jilly's fabulousness in my life. Especially if they've taken Vera away from me.
The only thing I really have to say about the rest of the series at this point is that they'd better not hurt Gwen, Rhys or Anwen. And not in that order. They'd ESPECIALLY better not touch Anwen, but I really wouldn't be able to handle anything happening to any of those three. Honestly? They can kill off all the new characters, Gwen's parents and Jack for all I care, as long as they don't fuck with that family. I don't want anything to happen to Jack, but he's lived a long life and he doesn't have a baby, so honestly, I could handle that a lot better. (Though I doubt that would happen, anyway, since they'll probably want to keep the Face of Boe theory alive.)
I miss monster of the week Torchwood. I miss Owen, Tosh and Ianto - but especially Owen and Tosh, probably, just because I ship them so hard. The first two series of Torchwood were fun to watch, but Children of Earth and Miracle Day have just been painful to me. It's not that they aren't good, but they're just too much for me, yet I have to watch them because I'm far too attached to these characters. But despite all that, I'm still grateful that we got more of Gwen and Jack at all...though I'll admit that I'm feeling less grateful as the weeks of Miracle Day go by, because it's just so hard to watch those characters I love have to go through all this. Honestly, as much as I'd rather still have them around, Owen, Tosh and Ianto are pretty lucky that they aren't here to see the Miracle.
And honestly, I'll probably go into denial and curl up in a corner with my own headcanon (which can be summarized as EVERYBODY LIVES) if anything too traumatizing happens to the Williams family.
I could really use some more Torchwood icons. Sailor Mars has nothing to do with this entry, but she looks like a badass and this entry is about badass people. Yup.
