So I went to go see Cirque du Soleil's Varekai show last weekend. Incredible. Unbelievable. Awe inspiring. I cannot begin to describe properly how amazing it was to see what those people are capable of. True artists of physical performance. The costumes were insane and fantastic, the clown acts were hysterical. With everyone in the show wearing these bizare costumes like something from Dr. Suess dreams, the funniest guy is the one in the blue leisure suit. The most bizare and incredible things you can imagine. I can't even think what my favorite act was.
There was an underwater scene that wasn't particularly awsome...I mean it was in no way anything I could ever comprehend doing, but it was perhaps less visually impressive than the guys who could fly or juggle 5 rubber balls out of their mouth with no hands. But the music and the dance for the underwater scene was so happy and wonderful. Lets see...there was the cool spinner guys. Red leather outfits with coat skirts and red leather skullcaps that make them look like warlocks. These guys can spin on their knees or even on their feet like dervishes. I mean...they are only spinning, but they are doing it unbelievably fast. And just as I was considering how Dervishes would fight that way, and wondering what it would look like, they pulled out...metal rods to simulate knives in one hand and metal bucklers in the other, so they did a sort of spinning combat dance with the metal ringing from their hits on each others "knives" and shields.
There is so much more...too much to say, and if had a job I might even have paid 37 dollars for the DVD copy of Varekai. Even of the several Cirque du Soleil shows I have seen in full or seen bits and pieces of, the theme and costumes in Varekai is most definitely my favorite. It wouldn't be the same to see it on DVD, but watching it would help me recall those memories. Not to mention the extra features on the bonus disc. When next I get employed, I will most definitely be getting that.
