We ran away to the Pacific Ocean last week. We both needed a get a way and the Groupon offer at the
Chateau Westport was just too good to pass up. The hotel was lovely, clean, triple sheets on the bed with a distant view of the water. As we unpacked, I cracked open a window and we could hear the sound of the waves.
Westport, Washington is a fishing village---not a tourist destination, though they hope tourists will come!. Less than 2,000 residents, it brings in 84 million pounds of seafood a year, making it the busiest port in Washington State. The Westport Marina has no leisure craft! Nope, just fishing trawlers! We heard that Westport becomes a ghost town in September when the boats all head to Alaska. There are several places to eat, good hearty fare, nothing fancy, but absolutely local, fresh seafood! We ate oysters!
Northwest beaches are not about bikinis and sun. Typical beach wear is your North Face jacket with a hoodie! We did visit Seaside, Oregon in August a few years ago. At least we could wear light clothing but the beach was wrapped in fog. I love this picture of our son flying a kite with our granddaughter.
I never knew I was a beach person until we moved up here. Now I understand and have totally succumbed to wave watching. And most days I don’t have to worry about the pesky sunshine! As a wave watcher, I love going to Golden Gardens Park, right on the Puget Sound, 20 minutes from our front door. It isn’t the ocean, but wave watching still works there!
Serious wave watching needs an ocean. Good thing we have one only 2-3 hours away. Our next trip, we hope to make the drive across the top of the Olympic Peninsula, skirting the Juan De Fuca Straights and then down the Pacific side. We did that a few years back and want to do it again. Here are a couple pictures from that trip.
I think I need a badge, WW, for official Wave Watcher.
