Professional success and financial stability really matter to me. I wish they didn't so much....but there it is.
Yesterday started out with an accusation that we had merely Google Translated a website we worked on before Christmas, which rocked me to my core. Google Translating is probably the worst thing you can accuse a translator of doing. (We use Google as a reference but would never, ever turn over a Google Translation to a client.)
The situation was that in December, we were asked to translate one specific section of a website, which we did and did well. However they actually wanted the entire website translated but hadn't communicated that to us. We were unable to take on such a massive project in such a short time, so they hired someone else to do the rest of the website (about 80%).
Yesterday we were told that numerous people had said the website was terribly translated and obviously done with Google. We took a look and it was indeed terrible! Not our section, of course, but the rest of the site was an embarrassment. However the client wasn't convinced that our section was any better than the rest (not being an English speaker) and we had to spend all day trying to show her the difference between what we had done and what they had done. I was quite upset in the afternoon, and had to go to the gym to de-stress and calm down. More back and forth in the evening finally resulted in a kinder email from the client, at 9:30pm, implying she had finally gotten word from people in the know that our part was done well. Today I got confirmation of that fact from her. Phew.
Then this morning I awoke to the lovely news that our main client in Spain, the one with the ogre editor, is very happy with our work - yay!
And I got a new medical editing job in, which is always a pleasure and provides a nice break from translating. Thanks, Joel.
So all is well on my main anxiety fronts.
Now if only I could find the time to do all the other stuff I want to do, namely studying Dutch and making music. I'm doing a little of each, but not as much as I'd like. Maybe time to work out a schedule.
