I'm not sure if they're still around, but I suspect the pubic wasn't ready in large enough numbers yet. There used to be a book "Car Free in Boston" that came out every year and listed all the transportation options in the metro-Boston area. Maps, schedules, phone numbers, etc... But Americans associate cars with status. Wouldn't it be cool if we could change "look how much stuff I can accumulate" to "look how skillfully I live".
