~Dad had surgery.
~Was supposed to take 6 hours (as my mom said to the surgeon: do they just feed you as they work??), only took 5.
~Was expected to lose a fair amount of blood and was prepared for a transfusion. In fact, blood loss was minimal and no transfusion was needed. (Over the years I have come to believe the hypnosis my mother prescribes to so heavily, she did the same things with my aunt who also lost very little blood during her hip replacement)
~Was expected to go straight to the Intensive Care Unit and spent the entire night there. Instead was stable enough to go right to Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for recovery and was in general recovery in hours.
~When they let us go visit him a couple of hours after surgery at the PACU Dad was a little woozy and while my mom was telling him what the doctor told her he interrupted to ask if it was raining. She, somewhat confused, said no, it was okay. Then he said "Good, the Red Sox will be on".
~Once we knew what room he was in (after a confusing search throughout MGH) we found him just minutes after the nurses got him settled attempting to get the TV to work (while half asleep) to watch the Game. As we were leaving he was asleep and Ortiz had just hit a homer.
Considering Mom brought Dad into pre-op at 5:30am and drove me and Beth home at 9:30 it was a long day for all - but ultimately a good one. We can all breath a little better now and focus on healing. One thing at a time.
