Hey all you crazy folks out there in El Jay land. Happy St. Paddy's day! How you all diggin' the new layout? I more or less snagged the color scheme (and for sure snagged the background pattern) from emilieautumn.com who, if you pay attention to my music tags, is not a web designer chiefly, but a musician. Who kicks ass. Check her out now.
So I never got to see that other American Cirque type show at UAkron, but guess what I did get to go see that I had to see while I was home if nothing else (not to undermine Anastasia, which I'll get to in a minute)? SHADOWBOX CABARET. Yeah. First time in a year. Which means the first time I've seen their faces since I got finished with my internship there. I feel like such a bad intern, but they were very forgiving and I resolved to be more frequent in my visits. They said that was good. Appearantly I've changed a lot since last year and the transformation has shocked them. They want to keep tabs on me. And I want to check up on them, too!
They've really changed the place since I've been there. I mean the walls are still all that really deep blue color, they've still got the little demon guy over the door holding a guitar, most of the people are still there, but they've made some new additions castwise and furnishingswise. In the first place, they've had another intern since I've left, and she's now a cast member. There were probably three people I didn't know which was a little weird. I know each of these people personally and now they've got people I don't know at all...weird. There were also some noticeable departures. Gary for one, and Tibbs, two of the three people who really took me under their wing and made me feel like I wasn't an outcast. Not gonna lie, I'm pretty sad I didn't get to see them.
It seems Shadowbox is rolling in money now, though. They've got more TV monitors, a bar-type thing over the balcony so more people can sit up there, more speakers....very classy.
They're running another musical right now. They're doing Cabaret, just on Sundays, and I'm looking for a good excuse to come back home and check it out while spreading the good word about S'box to the Tiffinites. ^_^ I'm so excited for summer when they're running Rocky Horror again, I finally get to see it. It'll be much easier to work out in the summer.
The show I saw was so funny. It was called 'Sex, Lies and Shadowbox', which I think was even racier than 'Sex at the Box', which I interned for. There were dancers in almost every song, they had an S and M fetish dance number(Lay it Down, by Ratt) that was....let's not mince our words, it was freaking hawt. In a completely different (comedy) sketch, they had
that man right there walk across the stage at the most random moment wearing a skirt(well he LIKES to wear a skirt when he plays drums to be fair), wearing a devilish grin and licking one of those big swirly lollipops. Hilarious shit.
Okay, enough of that.
I also went to go see TW's production of 'Anastasia', which was brilliant, as always. One of my best friends designed the lights, build a cyc light herself to accomodate the fact that there's a window and the fact that TW doesn't OWN a cyc. The set was gorgeous. Doc as always stepped in when a portrait needs to be painted, and it was a lovely Anastasia. The acting, as always was superb. There are some bright stars at my high school, I only hope that they use their talents in whatever field they choose, unlike a lot of past graduates.
I can't believe my friends who were Juniors last year are going through the same oh-my-god-it's-my-last-show-what-do-I-do-now anxiety I went through. They have to worry about college now and where they're gonna go. I can see so much of myself in them because so many of them just don't know what they want to do. So many of them want to study theatre, they just can't decide acting or tech, or they don't know wether BFA or just a BA or what institution will cater to them the best. It's kind of exciting to me because I'm kinda having the same crisis, I can relate to them.
Speaking of colleges, I now have a list and the main reasons I've chosen them as candidates.
Bowling Green- They have a really diverse theatre department.
Wright State- They have one of the best BFA theatre programs like ever.
Kent State- Because a bunch of people have suggested it for 3D arts and that's something else I love. I know nothing of their theatre department, but one of the Shadowbox guys has his BA from KSU and says it was cool back when he went so why not check it out?
I've applied to none of them so far, since deadlines for those suckers are due in like January, which means I'll probably be spending another semester at Heidelberg. Mom will cut me off if I go to Columbus State. Which is the last thing I need. I'll be pretty much starting over credits wise when I transfer anyhow, which bites. I may as well take a semester off to work and get some money, but I can't do that because no. Suck. This is gonna be like swallowing stones, but I'll do it. Because I'm a good person, dammit.
Jumping back to awesome plays, my bestest buddy who is living in Washington state right now TOTALLY wrote a play with me in it. It was written after a forum RP (anyone who knows what that is gets a gold star) we both participated in. The story was so cool it begged to be performed. So she wrote it into a one-act and had it performed at her community college. The story's kinda like "No Exit", but with memory loss. That's the best way I can think of to relate it to anything. Everybody's trapped in this house for unexplained reasons and they have no memories of their past, but slowly, they regain scraps of memories and realize that this one is the other's lover, and another one is her brother and he's best friends with the other one but can't stand the first person and so on. I can't wait to read the script, or better yet, have her send me a tape. I miss her so much, I wish I could have been there for her, but I'll have to wait for her to come back home in November. Sigh.
So hooray for the longest, most ramblish Livejournal post in history. I'm cutting myself off now before I jump on some other topic and go on forever.
