what about thanksgiving?

I am not a big fan of large corporations, but sometimes the need for coffee overpowers my inner hippie and I pull over at the nearest Starbucks. This has been a long week, so the need for coffee has been high. Early this morning on my way to work I made a quick stop by Starbucks. I pulled to the empty parking lot and parked the car. I got out of the car and suddenly felt disoriented. "Wait. What month is it?" There are Christmas wreaths hanging on the door! I walked in the front door and suddenly felt as if I had been transported to Santa's coffee shop. Instead of making toys, these over-sized elves were making carmel macchiatos. The store was decorated from top to bottom in red and green. Mugs with stockings and stars lined the shelves. I was in the same building two days ago! Why does it suddenly look like the North Pole?

As I approached the counter, I'm sure I looked confused. "Can I help you?" "Um..." *looks at the seasonal cookies next to the register, then back at the barista dressed like an elf.* "Does the Starbucks corporation realize that they kind of skipped Thanksgiving?" ...silence... apparently they thought nothing of skipping Thanksgiving. Finally one girl changing coffee filters said, "yeah, they do that every year." Me: "Well, that's not very nice. Thanksgiving is a great holiday. It deserves to be treated equally." I could tell they weren't interesting in my Thanksgiving schpeal, so I ordered my Americano (which was served in a red snowflakey cup) and went on my way.

The entire drive to work I couldn't help but think about the opportunity that Starbucks is missing out on. Where are my white chocolate cranberry lattes, fruit salad frappuccinos, marshmallow mochas, and pumpkin pie bars. Why do they think they can skip Thanksgiving?! It's not winter yet! It's still fall. Thanksgiving is a fall holiday. Feel free to break out the peppermint mochas and gingerbread lattes in December, but until then, keep your elf costumes in the closet!
