I’m kinda nervous and truly excited to be a part of PitchWars this year. These types of contests are amazing.

I’ve never been very good at pimping myself, but here goes:

My #PitchWars Basics:

I’m KT Hanna and I’m mentoring MIDDLE GRADE. I’ll be looking for the following:
  • Fantasy (all subgenres)
  • Science Fiction (all subgenres)
  • Horror and adventure are fine as long as there’s some supernatural/magical element
  • Please note: The darker, creepier, weirder - the better
  • Exceptional writing that gives me chills (Writing will always trump - Wow me)

However - I’m not your girl for contemporary or realistic fiction

Now for the details, and don’t forget to visit the other mentors. The link list is at the end of this post

My reading taste:

I like strange things - that is, different stories. Ones I haven’t heard or read a thousand times. Something bold, something new, nothing borrowed. Something frightening. Something that shouldn’t - couldn’t possibly exist - but oh how we secretly wish it did.

I want to have a hard time sleeping, whether I’m scared or just mulling over the book I just binged because it made me think that much. Give me something fresh and cheeky, with sass and sarcasm, but please make sure it has a heavy dose of grit.

I’m not a light and fluffy person, but I do like humour - the darker the better - and never forget that I want to fall in love with your characters. Don’t confuse this with romance, it needs to be seamless, a natural part of the story’s progression. However, I am perfectly fine with strong friendships (especially because this will be MG)

Examples of books I love (NOTE: I’ve not just listed MGs because I wanted to give a better overall picture of the type of mood I’m looking for)
  • Coraline - Neil Gaiman
  • Ranger’s Apprentice - John Flanagan
  • Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling
  • Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
  • Young Wizards - Diane Duane
  • The School of Good and Evil - Soman Chainani
  • Most of Stephen King’s earlier stuff
  • Add Dean Koontz and Clive Barker to that list
  • Vicious - V.E. Schwab
  • Blood Magic - Tessa Gratton
  • Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman

Why you should pick me

I adore the weird and wonderful things of the world. If I fall in love with your manuscript you I will do everything in my power to help you make it the best you possibly can.

Well, and I have an Australian accent

What you can expect from me as a mentor

My crit style is thorough and honest. I won’t mollycoddle you. I’ll pick apart your prose with just as much enthusiasm as I gush over the good elements.

Every critique I give comes with a caveat: that it is my opinion - and it is your book. And where I can, I will always offer suggestions as to possible solutions for the problems I see. But I am NOT a copy editor. Sorry.

Sound satisfactory? Excellent

Last but not least -

A little bit about me:

I’m an Australian expat, living currently in Kansas USA, although I have lived and worked in Germany too. My husband whisked me away after meeting me in Everquest 2 (an online MMORPG), and married me in 2007. We currently have a beautiful toddler girl, two corgis, and a very laid back kitty. Yes, you read that right, I traded Australia for Kansas.

That’s true love right there.

I’m a binge writer, reader, and editor with a penchant for TV series such as Buffy, Supernatural, and Sleepy Hollow etc. Every story I write or love has dark elements. Hence all of the above.

I tweet too much, procrastinate a lot, and love a good gif party.

Why yes, I am a writer.

So that’s pretty much me

If you’re still here, and you think you have the MS for me?

Pop over to Brenda Drake’s Blog and check out how you choose me as one of your potential mentors.

I’m on Twitter as @KTHanna and remember to send me all the weird, creepy, and fantastical MG you have! I can’t wait to see it!
