I have stood here before
it seems at once, forever and never
at the entrance to the labyrinth,
beside the fire,
surrounded by the darkness.
I stand here now in helpless awe
knowing that if only
my wishing made it so
the body and the mind
would heal without a scar.

It is...
The bridge that must be crossed
and afterwards, burned.
The distance that must be covered
on the road we must travel.
The fear that must be challenged
with the strength found within us.
The hurt that must be at least forgiven
if not forgotten.
The problem that must be solved or resolved
for better or for worse.
The past that must be remembered
without sad songs.
The mistake that must be made
and then learned from.
The sea that must be sailed upon
and treated with respect.
The burden that must be borne
without bitterness or resentment.
The cloth that must be torn
and used for other purposes.
The work that must be done
and afterwards undone,
though there are things
once done, that have no undoing.
The battle that must
be fought if not won.
The darkness we must go through
and the love we must go to.
The urgency we must tame
and often never name
For we remain the same
and yet are changed by it
into something we were not
or could not have been
except for what it is
we struggle with.
