Naomi's room at Starfleet Academy - Friday afternoon
Naomi was going over her Salutatorian speech for graduation, which was going to be tomorrow. She still couldn’t believe she was about to graduate from Starfleet Academy and she couldn’t believe that it had been four years since she graduated Fandom. At least this time round she could expect her graduation to go relatively smoothly and then after that she would be on her first assignment, where she was going to be Chief Science Officer on the USS Rhode Island.
That was actually the part that she was really having trouble believing, she had still been weeks shy of graduating when Captain Harry Kim had asked her to meet him in his office.
The meeting had started out fairly straight forward; general pleasantries were exchanged before Harry got to the point of why he had wanted to see her.
“I understand you’ve already had a few offers after graduation?” he enquired, “the Excalibur, K7 Space Station...” he listed a few more, “I also understand you haven’t accepted an offer yet?”
“No sir,” Naomi replied, “I’m still trying to decide which one will be the best one for me to do,” the truth was that she had been considering taking the offer to work on K7, which was where she had done her work placement for the past couple of years.
“I see...” Harry replied, “well, that’s actually good that you haven’t accepted anything just yet, it’s why I wanted to talk to you. You’ve probably heard I’ve been assigned to the USS Rhode Island?”
Naomi nodded, she had actually heard about the mission from Icheb who was going to be serving as first officer.
“Commander Icheb is going to be my First Officer,” he went on to explain, “and I have filled in most my Senior Crew, with the exception of my Chief Science Oficer,” he looked at her pointedly.
“You want to me to be Chief Science Officer?” Naomi was stunned, “but I will have only just graduated the Academy!”
“I was Chief of Operations on Voyager straight out of the Academy,” Harry pointed out, “it’s not completely unheard of,”
A few minutes of silence past as Naomi considered the offer, the name Rhode Island was not completely unfamiliar to her, the name had cropped up over her time at Fandom on those weekends when she had those future reunions and she knew by her own future kids that her and Icheb worked together in Starfleet. Could it be possible that future that she had had glimpses of, was the one that she was actually going to have.
“So?” Harry asked another few minutes, “do I have a yes?”
“Yes,” it turned out Naomi really didn’t need that long to think about it, “I would be honoured,”
As she finished reading over her speech, she glanced around her dorm room, which was pretty empty. Most of her items had already been shipped off, she wasn’t expected to check in to the Rhode Island until the day after graduation. Her roommate’s side was also fairly empty, Chrystal was going to be heading off on her first assignment to Deep Space Nine, where she would be working in Operations.
Still, after four years of sharing the room, it was still feeling strange seeing it so empty.
