I'm so bad at taking criticism. Today the teacher I subbed for on Tuesday told me that her translator/aide/whatever told her the ESOL kids were walking all over me. Out of 3 ESOL classes, 2 students gave me trouble, and by trouble I mean that kept trying to get out of doing work when all they really had to do in class was do any work from any class. The aide told me to write up one boy in particular so I wrote up a referral then told him I would give it to him if he didn't start working, so he did. The teacher told me, "If she tells you to write someone up, you write them up." It kind of pissed me off. I was in charge and I didn't think it was that bad, especially compared to some classes I've done.
Then at lunch today I made the mistake of complaining about my awful classes. It was art, so of course most of them just talked, and the problem was a few people, in different classes, would get up and walk out of the room for a few minutes. I didn't bother writing them up, b/c I would have had to write up like 5 people and I had a headache and didn't really care. I know, that's bad. I did, however, write up a kid who signed out to go to the bathroom and never came back. So I told this all to a teacher I've talked to a couple of times and she went on and on about how now they're going to always take advantage of me and I should write them up whenever that happens. Oh, and she lectured me on not sending a second person up with them to make sure they actually go. The only time I've been told to send an escort is in elementary school. She made me feel like shit.
Here's my problem with writing kids up over every little thing. First of all, I don't think the office takes it too seriously when a sub writes someone up...I'm sure they think, oh this sub just can't handle the kids or is too sensitive or something. And secondly, how would it look if I wrote up every kid today who had out a cell phone or violated dress code or walked out without a pass? I would be the incompetent sub who is referral happy. I tend to only write up kids who are trying to start fights or give me a lot of attitude and distracting the whole class from work. So who's right? And as for the first part about the teacher from the other day...what's wrong with giving someone a second chance? Yesterday I was at a middle school and the other teacher in the room told me to write someone up so I got out the referral and asked if she really wanted me to and she told me just to watch him and make sure he was working. That's exactly what I did at the high school, and they said I was wrong. Today just sucked.
Oh yeah, and when I'm the one in charge, my rules should go, unless the teacher left specific instructions on how to handle the students when they get in trouble or anything else really. I have the authority to say no one can go to the library even if the teacher always lets them go...same thing with the millions of times kids ask to go to the bathroom. If I say go between classes, that should be fine, even if the teacher lets them go during class. Unless the teacher says "It's ok to go to the library" or "they just sign out to go to the bathroom and that's fine" then my rules should go. And yes, some teachers do leave very specific instructions like that.
Oh yeah, and teachers always tell their students they should be better for the sub than they are for them. If any teacher thinks that actually happens then they need to go out and sub a few times.
Is it the weekend yet?
