'New Moon' Stars Give Bella And Jacob Details At Comic-ConKristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner talk about Bella and Jacob's relationship in the 'Twilight' sequel.
By Larry Carroll
SAN DIEGO - Thursday at Comic-Con, the Gandalfs, Green Lanterns, Greedos, "Galactica" fans and other, well, geeks, stepped aside and made room for the latest annual convention phenomenon: "Twilight." As the stars sped around from one event to the next, "New Moon" actors Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were the queen and king of the festivities - and when we caught up with them for an exclusive interview, they were eager to talk about their playful relationship and living in the shadow of Edward Cullen.
"We needed to put a little bit more Rob in the movie - for whatever reason," Stewart laughed, referring to her breakout co-star Robert Pattinson and the decision to insert him throughout the film in a series of "hallucination" sequences.

21 Qs With 'New Moon' Director Chris Weitz
Katie Bain
Hollywood.com Staff
Chris Weitz is the, um, male director with the epic task of bringing the achingly romantic New Moon to the big screen. He explains how - plus, his thoughts on taking on the fourth installment, Breaking Dawn.
What was your interest in coming on board a franchise like this, that has predominantly been more popular with women than with men?
Chris Weitz: Actually, in that regard, my brother and I often end up doing movies whose predominant audience is either women or whose kind of tipping point of success relies on a female audience. Even American Pie.
In as much as the Twilight series has a global appeal to women, I think it reflects that it really concentrates on the emotions of the central character and romance. And I think that's something unfortunately that the studio system has not been very good at getting boys to be interested in. They think, maybe correctly, that all the male gender is interested in is things blowing up, and robots and that sort of stuff. I don't really think that's true. I certainly didn't make this movie with an eye towards only girls or women being interested in seeing it. There's a lot for diverse audiences, including older audiences.
But really, frankly, I was drawn to the cast and I thought that the central cast was great, and I wanted to work with them. And it also sort of employed some skills I had picked up along the way, including working with special effects, working with younger actors and working on kind of emotionally-centered stories.

Comic-Con overwhelmed by studio blitzkrieg
In fact, according to this AP dispatch, the "New Moon" panel, which featured Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, the film's three teen-dreams, was a shriekfest, with high-pitched screams from fangirls drowning out the introductions as well as much of the dialog from the clips from the new film--especially the clips that featured Pattinson and Lautner shedding their T-shirts. As Heritage put it: "The whole thing sounded so awful that we'd be genuinely surprised if footage of the event didn't end up on a terrorist training video by the end of the year."
Ah, isn't it wonderful when the Hollywood carnival comes to town?

'Twilight' fans at Comic Con sink teeth into Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner
Thousands of adoring fanatics packed the Hall and shrieked every time the young cast's names were mentioned as director Chris Weitz warmed up the room.
"I've been stalking Rob Pattinson for about 10 years now," he cracked, "so when I got a chance to get within touching distance of him, I leapt for it."
Weitz debuted exclusive clips from "New Moon" opening on November 20, which has Kirsten Stewart's teenage character Bella Swan maturing and striking out on her own without Edward, the undead hunk played by Pattinson.
In the sequel, Bella is torn between old flame Edward and new man Jacob Black, a charismatic werewolf played by Taylor Lautner. Six-pack abs and adolescent angst abound.

Twihards Overpower Cosplayers as "New Moon" Hits Comic-Con
It's true: a quick, unscientific survey revealed that a solid majority of the people in line outside (mostly women) were primarily there for "New Moon," and crossing their fingers that they'd get into the hall, or at least a glimpse of its stars. A lot of them were wearing "Twilight" T-shirts, official or homemade; more than a few were wearing "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" Burger King crowns. Why no Team Bella? "Bella's not really that important," said Hana Takio, a Team Jacob enthusiast who'd taken her place in the line around 9:30 AM for the New Moon panel five hours later. "It's all about the eyes."

Depp drops in. Mumbles. Leaves.
In five words. Exactly. Well, that's all he had for the audience excitedly watching a preview of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
You can see how he might have felt miffed, of course. The audience, though thrilled at his appearance, was overwhelmingly made up of people who'd been queuing all night for the Twilight panel, which came later than the Disney morning panel. I don't care how laidback and tousled you are, when you're being stared at by 6,500 bleary-eyed teens who are clearly all thinking "Well he's all right, but he's no Robert Pattinson …" that's got to be a kick in the tousled nuts.
&
That Twilight panel
Was enjoyed greatly.
The three leads (the vampire, the girl, and a hot dog - sorry, sexy werewolf), flirted with each other, complimented the fans and talked about how working on Twilight: New Moon, was one of the greatest experiences of their lives. And a great film that everyone should go and see (obviously).
The noise "SQUEEEEEE!" was made early, loudly, and often, by all.
Meanwhile, on the other side of a heavily guarded conference door, 100,000 grumpy genre fans grumbled about the fact that, frankly, if vampires are sparkle, they're not real vampires.

Robsten Bummed Out at Comic-Con?
Between press duties, Kristen's even taking her smoking breaks without Rob, who's holing up by himself, all in butch plaid, accompanied by his blondie-gal keeper, no Kristen in sight.
So far. Interesting, though, gotta tell ya: K.Stew's been takin' her cig breaks with, ahem, Team Jacob! Yes, with Taylor! What the ef's that about? Mr. Lautner, care to explain?
Many, many more things still developing, so keep comin' back to the Awful Truth, and we'll have lots more for ya, like:
• So far, only Rob's officially staying the night in San Diego; most of the New Moon cast is heading back to L.A. Kristen, surely not you, doll?
• Rob Pattinson's people, I'm assured, are livid at the latest Awful Truth copycat People cover screaming all about R.Pattz's troublesome love life. Oh please. Get pissed about security, folks, not this stuff.
• The "big surprise" Summit had planned for Comic-Con? The New Moon team going around to personally say hello to area screenings of Twilight. Sweet, but not quite the slobbering Robsten heat we all wanted, eh?
• Rob has been maneuvering, undetected, around the convention in sunglasses and a jacket. Several times. Always alone. Happy, he is not. Damn. Do something about that Ms. Stewart, like, tonight!

Comic-Con and 'New Moon' Dominate Today's Tweet Dreams
No shocker here. Comic-Con, which kicked off today in San Diego, was one of Twitter's top trending topics today beat only by #intheclub (um, okay....). And you better believe some of our favorite celebs got in on the action. "New Moon" stars Rachelle Lefevre and Christian Serratos announced they were in a bus headed to the convention center, while "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane claimed he had no idea what all the "Twilight" fuss was about. Get with the program, Seth!
While one of our favorite heartthrobs (RPattz, natch) was heating up Comic-Con, another sent out a "killer" Tweet about making a fan's day. In other news, a musician's daughter became an aspiring vampire and another musician had a run in with a "real" vampire.

K.Stew and R.Pattz Forced Apart in San Diego?
There was some unexplained tension going on between Robsten yesterday, since the real-life couple was entirely separated behind the scenes. Kristen chose to hang with abtastic Taylor Lautner instead.
So what's the inside info on this whole love mess?
Seems we here at the A.T. fell into the exact trap the studio suits were trying to set up.
"Right now, it's all about Taylor and Kristen," relayed an inside source involved in the selling of the whole Twilight movie phenomenon.
"People are pushing them together in the media and behind the scenes because the studio knows the whole world is watching all the time," dishes Deep Twi. "Rob and Kristen? No."
Now, for any of you who don't believe in the old-fashioned art of reading and who haven't paged through the Twilight books, the next movie is almost entirely centered on Kristen's and Taylor's characters. Taylor even beefed up his bod, big-time, for the R.Pattz-threatening task at hand.

Werewolf's Abs Steal Show at Twilight Squealfest
“The hardest thing for me was eating - eating constantly,” Lautner said of his intensive training routine, which required him to pound protein shakes and other healthy foods so he didn’t waste away on his calorie-burning regimen.
Pattinson’s part of shiny vamp Edward Cullen didn’t take as much work, according to Lautner’s heartthrob co-star, who said technology made his job as easy.
“All these machines do the acting for me,” Pattinson said, “and that’s the way I like it.”
Director Weitz - who admitted he hadn’t read Stephenie Meyer’s popular Twilight novels, upon which the films are based, before getting involved with the sequel - concurred.
“Rob just sort of stood there lookin’ good,” Weitz joked.

Taylor Lautner On Marrying Kristen Stewart & Why You’ll Never Hear Him Growl
“I was on my Twitter page and I had uploaded a photo from the press conference and it’s so funny how everybody is just reading into every move,” the Dish told Kristen and Taylor. “Like, I guess you were leaning into Robert, so they thought.”
“I wasn’t even sitting next to him,” Kristen was quick to point out.
“No, when you guys were doing photos, and [My Twitter followers] were like, ‘Oh, I think they’re dating because they’re leaning into each other.’”
“Yeah, those things happen, if you’re seen together,” Taylor explained.
Making light of the fan speculation and as if straight out of a scene from “Twilight,” Kristen affectionately leaned her head on Taylor’s shoulder and longingly gazed into his eyes.
“We’re getting married now!” Taylor said with a laugh.

Twilight Sequel Draws Thousands to Comic Con
Director Chris Weitz was joined by Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Ashley Greene.
High-pitched screams drowned out the introductions.
Those same shrill screams (of joy) also threatened to overwhelm the dialogue during the clip filmmakers showed.
The clip shows Jacob (Lautner) teaching Bella Swan (Stewart) how to ride a motorcycle, but she's distracted by visions of the vampire Edward (Pattinson) with whom she fell in love. She crashes, and Jacob takes off his shirt to soothe her wound, provoking more fangirl screams. Lautner famously gained more than 20 pounds of muscle since for the role.
Pattinson, who was greeted with adoring screams when made his Comic Con debut with "Twilight" last year, said the event was "an eye-opener, and it's just gotten bigger and bigger since."
"None of us saw it coming," Lautner added.
"It's a little overwhelming to have so many people here," Stewart said, "but I guess it's a good thing."

Twilight Zone
But Pattinson admitted he has become protective of the franchise as plans ramp up to shoot the subsequent chapters of Stephenie Meyer's quadrilogy: Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
Reading the script for Eclipse, which gets underway later this year, he said, "I find myself getting argumentative, which I'm not usually."
Nothing personal
There is constant speculation, of course, about the real-life rapport between magazine-cover magnets Pattinson and Stewart. So expectedly, personal questions at yesterday's news conference -- which saw Lautner seated between his two co-stars -- were treated like IEDs, with a Summit Entertainment executive throwing herself on a grenade lobbed about their off-screen chemistry.
Instead, Stewart, who at times struggles to articulate her thoughts in interviews, focused on the film at hand.
"It's a more severely emotional movie. It's not just about discovery or falling in love. She's a manic depressive, basically," said the 19-year-old L.A.-bred actress, sporting dyed black hair for her role as rocker Joan Jett in a forthcoming Runaways biopic. "It's a more mature part because she's older and she's got more to deal with."

Kristen Stewart Goes On Manic-Depressive Journey For 'New Moon''It's a severely emotional movie,' actress says at San Diego Comic-Con.
"I wouldn't say that one was more difficult than the other," she said at Comic-Con when asked to compare Bella in "Twilight" to Bella in "New Moon." "This is definitely more ... it's a severely emotional movie. Everybody knows that. That's the one big difference."
In "Twilight," Stewart reasoned, Bella's emotions are more romantic than they are in the second film, when Edward's departure sinks her in a deep depression until she finds that she has hallucinations of Edward whenever she's in dangerous situations. "This movie's not about discovery or falling in love, which is sort of an intense emotion, but this is like low, and there are high points for it too," she said, adding, "And she's a manic-depressive, basically."
But she does note there is one person who is able to turn things around for Bella: her friend Jacob Black, once again played by Taylor Lautner.

Kristen Stewart Reveals Her New Favorite Band At Comic-Con
Without a doubt, the event that stirred up the most ruckus so far at this year's San Diego Comic-Con was the panel featuring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, the three stars of the ubiquitous "Twilight" movie franchise. One of the major headlines coming out of yesterday's presser was the fact that Stewart appears to be fully embracing her current role as Joan Jett in the biopic about the Runaways. She showed up to the event in her Jett hair and wearing a T-shirt that said "Minor Threat" on it.
