Poltergeist

I just read that Poltergeist was rereleased in some theaters yesterday for its 25th anniversary.

It was the first horror movie I ever watched. Back then, Showtime and HBO were quite popular since not many people had VCRs and they showed movies only a few months after it had its run through the theaters and without all the TV edits. My parents kept me away from scary movies since I was too young at the time. I wanted to see the movie badly because of all the previews Showtime aired and I was happy to find out it was playing one night when I got to spend the night at my grandmother's place in the city. I asked her if I could watch it, knowing I had a better chance of her saying yes than my parents since she was a fan of horror flicks. She asked me what the movie was about, checked out the booklet herself, and then agreed to let me watch it. I got just past the tree scene before I shut off the TV and ran into her bedroom. I can still picture her laughing at me. I think she knew I wouldn't get that far into it. About a month later, I did end up watching the rest of the movie (in pieces) at my babysitter's house with her kids. I was curious about it because I had to make sure the girl got back with her family in the end.

To this day, I still think of the movie whenever I pass by a huge tree or when I see a clown.
