My relationship with video games began early. When exactly my family got the original NES, I'm not sure, but it was sometime before I started Kindergarten in 1990, and may have been
as early as Christmas 1988, which is when the well-known Mario/Duck Hunt bundle was released. We had some totally awesome games, like Ninja Turtles Arcade Game, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Contra. We also had the infamous original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Legend of Zelda, which I thought was pretty boring and stupid, and I don't even know how I managed to do much at all with it as a 4 year old. I have fond memories of games we never owned, like the unforgettable Bubble Bobble (also beloved in arcade form at the local Mr. Gatti's), and sports games that my dad let me beat him at. But there are a great many NES classics I never knew, though I certainly wouldn't have appreciated many of them at that age.
We never got a Super Nintendo. So I never knew the classics of that era. However, Christmas 1993 brought the Sega Genesis. My notable games on that system include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic and Knuckles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters, Jurassic Park, Aladdin, and Earthworm Jim 2 (as a rental).
I played a lot with my brother and I remember many of the games very well. I was never keyed into the market, though I did get the Sega magazine for a while. I wasn't getting the latest games all the time, and though I had a decent number of games, I didn't have many of what would be known as the top games.
And then I completely missed the next console generation. But that's when I discovered PC games.
