Chapter 12

“I’m just going to go and play Sian.” Jack stated before quickly smiling and rushing off to the playground leaving Sophie and Sian sitting on the park bench. “I love you.” Sian whispered before taking Sophie’s hand in her own. Sophie didn’t move it away all she did was snort with disgust. Sian looked at Sophie with tear stained eyes. “Why won’t you believe me?” Sophie looked at Sian and shrugged. “Because if you loved me we would be together?” Sian moved closer. “It’s not that simple ok Soph?” Sophie didn’t respond. “Nothing ever is you have to understand.” Sophie shook her head. “It is simple. I’ve told you this. You are the one making it complicated.” Sian nodded in agreement and mumbled “Sorry”. “You can’t expect me to believe you?” Sophie stated. “I do.” Sian replied. She then moved even closer and kissed Sophie’s cheek. “I never wanted this to happen Soph. All I want is you but I have a past and Rebecca holds the key to my future.” Sophie pulled away and turned her back to Sian. Sian knew this was breaking Sophie’s heart. She knew it was breaking her own heart. This situation wasn’t what she wanted. But she had a dark past. Rebecca knew it. Rebecca was part of it. She was partly to blame. She was the one who could make Sian do anything she wanted because she knew about it. Rebecca was still involved with that institution and Sian knew she always would be. Sian couldn’t leave Rebecca. Rebecca wouldn’t let her. “Do you love her?” Sophie asked causing Sian to stop her train of thought. “Do you love ‘Sacha’?” Sian copied Sophie.

“Well I like her. I like her alot. Love? I don’t know. Maybe in the future yeah but I might as well try I’ve got nothing else to fight for have I?” Sophie admitted. Sian gulped. If she let Sophie slip away she would lose her forever. Sophie would fall in love with Sacha and would forget about her. “I’m happy for you.” Sian lied. Sophie laughed. “Of course you are. Like I’m happy for you and my BOSS!” Sophie replied sarcastically. “Soph...” Sian cried.

“So is that your mum then?” A young red haired girl asked Jack. “No it’s my sister.” Jack smiled. “She’s really pretty.” The girl said. She picked up a sweet from her bag and passed it to Jack. They exchanged a smile and he gratefully took the sweet from her. “And the blonde one is too.” She said. “They love each other.” Jack smiled looking over at Sophie and Sian. “That’s cute.” The girl smiled before standing up and holding her hand out to Jack. “You coming on the slide?” He nodded and took her hand before they ran off to join the other children.

“Can we start again? Can we try to be friends?” Sian asked through her tears. Sophie snapped her head round. “Are you serious?” Sophie asked. Sian nodded weakly. “You are something you are Sian.” Sophie snorted. “Please.” Sian begged again taking Sophie’s hand. “How can I be your friend when I’m utterly in love with you?” Sophie asked. “All I want to do is forget about you, us. I don’t want to be your friend Sian. You made me feel cheap and worthless. Let me move on if you don’t want me.” Sophie cried. “Soph I do want you.” Sian couldn’t hold the tears. “Fine let’s try and be friends.” Sophie sniffed. “Thank you.” Sian murmured. If this was it. If this was them just being friends she had to say goodbye. She pulled Sophie towards her. She wrapped her arms around her neck. Sophie was shocked and confused but she didn’t pull away. Sian looked at Sophie in the eyes before leaning in slowly. As soon as their lips connected the sparks flew. It started slow, loving but as the realisation of what this kiss was it turned desperate and passionate. Sian shoved her tongue in Sophie’s mouth causing Sophie to groan. She didn’t hold back. She wanted to explore all of Sophie’s mouth one last time. She wanted to taste her, feel her and touch her. Sian pulled away breathless and rested her forehead on Sophie’s. Sophie didn’t say anything but when their eyes met Sian knew Sophie understood that was it. If they couldn’t be together then that was goodbye. And it was so worth it. Sian pulled away. As she stood up she let the tears fall a second time. She quickly grabbed Sophie’s hand and stroked it. She bent down so she was level with Sophie. “Just remember it’s not out of choice Soph.” She then kissed Sophie’s forehead and walked off. Sophie sniffed. She had no more tears left. Sian had wiped her out. She sat watching Jack playing and smiled. She regretted shouting at him earlier. It wasn’t his fault she was heartbroken and it wasn’t his fault she was in a bad mood.

Jack said goodbye to his new friend and ran back to Sophie. “Sian told me she had to go.” Jack said as he sat down next to Sophie. He was worried she would shout at him again. “Yeah looks like it’s just you and me kiddo.” Sophie smiled. “I’m so sorry Jack.” She pulled him into a hug. “I forgive you Sophie. Sian said you were just not feeling very well.” Sophie pulled back and stood up. “Let’s go get some ice cream and then we’ll go home eh?” Jack smiled widely and jumped up grabbing his sister’s hand tightly causing her to giggle.

“Anyone in?”  Sian called as she opened the front door. “In here babe.” Rebecca called from the kitchen. Sian wandered in but was shocked by what she saw. “Sian. How good to see you.” Simon grinned menacingly at her. Simon was Rebecca’s brother and was part of Rebecca’s family’s business. They ruined Sian’s life and now he was back again? Sian knew this wasn’t going to work out good. Simon was vicious. He would do anything to get what he wanted and Sian knew he would hurt her if he needed to. Sian was scared. There was no way she could be with Sophie now. If they ever found out they wouldn’t kill her they would hurt Sophie which would hurt Sian more than any physical pain. She had to give up on her and Sophie for Sophie’s safety. “Yeah you too.” Sian mumbled. This didn’t go unnoticed by Rebecca. “Don’t be fucking rude Sian.” Sian mumbled sorry. She then looked up and noticed what they were doing on the table. “What the fuck?” Sian asked. “Just a bit of business sweetheart.” Simon said. He packed away the stuff and winked at Rebecca. “Don’t call me  sweetheart.” Sian gritted her teeth. Rebecca looked angry. She grabbed Sian by the hair and slammed her head down onto the counter. “Don’t get involved Sian.” She said. “Please.” Sian cried as Rebecca pulled away. “Becks leave it. She’s learnt her lesson.” Simon said. For once Sian was grateful for Simon being there but it didn’t last long. As Rebecca let go and sat down, Simon lifted Sian’s chin up with his finger. “So Blondie you got a problem?” He held her wrist tightly and twisted it causing Sian to gasp in pain. “No.” Sian gasped. He twisted harder one more time before pushing her on the floor. “Good.” As Sian looked down at her red wrist he spat at her.

“See you later?” He asked Rebecca. She nodded and he let himself out. Sian stayed on the floor rubbing her wrist. “You deserved that.” Rebecca said. She then bent down and looked Sian in the eyes. Sian didn’t feel love like she did with Sophie. She felt hate, anger but most of all she was terrified of Rebecca and her family. “What do you want for tea babe?” Rebecca asked pretending nothing had happened. This happened regularly. She’d lash out and then five minutes later act like nothing had happened. Sian had learnt to play along otherwise she would get hurt ten times worse. “You decide babe.” Sian smiled. “Lasagne?” Rebecca asked. Sian nodded and rubbed her wrist. It was still hurting and Sian knew there would be a mark. Rebecca kissed Sian forcefully on the lips. Sian responded but didn’t feel anything. It was Rebecca kissing her not her kissing Rebecca. “I’m going for a lie down.” Sian muttered. “Alright babe I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.” Rebecca replied happily. Sian nodded before rushing upstairs. She locked the bedroom door before looking under the bed. “Bingo.” She said out loud as she pulled out a shoe box. She smiled as she took out the contents. There were a few photos, a necklace, pieces of paper and a pink and white polka dot hoodie. Sian pulled the hoodie close and cried. It still smelt of Sophie even after this time and Sian couldn’t get enough of that scent. It was intoxicating and Sian would never get tired of it. She looked at the photos of her and Sophie and cried. She was so happy in those photos. As she ran her finger over the silver necklace she thought back to the day Sophie gave it to her and bit her lip. Sian opened one of the small notes and gasped. She had totally forgotten about it. It was a love note Sophie had given her when they were acting like teenagers one day. They were watching TV and they just decided to start writing each other secret love notes. It was random and would seem lame to most people but it was their special thing to do. It was their ‘couple activity’. As she tidied all the contents in the box she smiled at the memories and love that box contained. It was her reminder of Sophie. Her Sophie. Sian cursed herself. She wasn’t her Sophie anymore she was Sacha’s. Sian lay back onto the bed and pulled the hoodie into her chest. As she closed her eyes she imagined Sophie was with her and fell into a peaceful sleep.
