In all seriousness, though, I totally see Obama sitting in his office, headdesking repeatedly. In all honestly he can't really repeal DADT right now, not while he need Republican backing for his healthcare plan. And personally I think that health care is probably the most important thing on his plate. He probably had just been assuming because ( Read more... )

And then you have the people who are mad that, only nine months into his presidency, that he hasn't done it. Because they don't seem to realize that while he can issue a presidential order to stop enforcing it, it's a bad idea because they'll lean on that as a crutch against actually repealing the law. And then the next president, if they don't agree with gays in the military, can just stop the presidential order...

I agree that healthcare is more important. But I don't believe that he'll get Republican backing for the healthcare bill no matter how much he changes it to meet their requests. DADT at this time would distract from health care, so I'm (mostly) okay with him waiting. But I believe he is doing it more to avoid offending more conservative Democrats or Democrats in Republican districts than because he doesn't want to upset the Republicans. The Republicans are automatically against anything he does - stepping gingerly around their sensitive feelings won't help that.
