chicago is cheaper

Why is Chicago so cheap to fly in and out of? <-- rhetorical; I basically know the answer to this.

I just discovered something sort of crazy/ridiculous -- pretty much anywhere I'd want to go (I tried a number of destinations), it's cheaper to fly from Chicago to that place, connecting through Detroit (on Northwest), than it is to fly from Detroit there directly (on any airline, including Northwest).

Example:
New York -> Chicago, direct = $148
New York -> Chicago, connecting through Detroit = $200
New York -> Detroit = $263

So, I'm wondering -- could I just book flights that way? From my bitter past experience I know that if you don't fly a portion of your reservation that airlines (especially Northwest!!) automatically cancel the rest. But they also say that if you notify them first, they'll say "ok" and not cancel it. Is that really true? Will they listen to you, or will you be cancelled?

I ask because I'm seriously considering booking my flights from now on this way, at least, whenever I need to use Northwest.
