Well, I had my first interview on Friday. It took them about two weeks to get back to me! I was really anxious about the interview, so I trimmed my scraggly beard but didn’t know what to do with my even worse hair besides a little trim in the back. I couldn’t decide what clothes to wear but eventually decided on a teal button down shirt I got ( Read more... )

Congrats! Even if you don't accept this particular job, just getting accepted somewhere certainly builds confidence for the hunt. I hope MIT sets up some interview times, and you end up with a number of options to choose between.

Wow, you'd be making more than I do...not like that's a lot of money, but it's better than most people I know who are volunteering or living on minimum wage. I'm sorta amazed you didn't take the job right there on the spot but either way, congrats! That's exciting.

I dunno, I'm worried about not remembering the statistics as well as I should...I hope I'm qualified, but we'll see!

I've talked to a lot of my older friends who have established jobs about exactly this issue. I remember feeling unqualified for most of the jobs I applied for, but my friends told me that everyone feels that way and that employers realize you're not going to know everything when you show up for the first day of your job. You have to at least partially learn as you go, and if you're really feeling insecure about it, you could always go back and review some of the statistics before you start the job. But in seriousness, one of my friends here is the head of Research and Development for a software company that he co-founded. They're doing really well; they just got picked up on a 2 year contract with Compcast. We were talking the other night and basically came to the conclusion that I know more about programming than he does! And I know almost nothing!! So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I like ur idea of calling up the other places to see if they'll give you interviews. Options are good. But so is starting your first job ever getting paid 35k a year! Woot. I mean i'd take a job doing some pretty crap stuff if it paid that well (at least for a first job). Grab life by the balls!!
