So.. lately.. one of my favorite things to do after a long day is to sit on the back deck of my new home. It seems like I notice something new about my new neighborhood almost every day. My latest fascination is how many creatures live here. I have my many squirrel and bird feeders out back, so seeing those on a regular basis are of no surprise to me. I love to sneak up on them with my camera and capture them right at the moment they pick up a piece of food. My computer photo album is filling up so fast.
One day last week I thought I would check out a bird's nest that is nestled in a thick growth of ivy on one of the columns here out back. I am not tall enough to go up and see what was inside, so I lifted my little boy up to take a look. I was pretty surprised when he told me there was a lizard in there. I set him down and got a box to stand on and take a look, and sure enough, there WAS a lizard.. in a bird's nest! Next thing I know they're everywhere.. I noticed one right after the other in various places on the column, hiding amidst the ivy. It was awesome.
A couple of days after that, I was laying in my hammock looking up at the sky. The sun was setting, and it was growing darker every minute in the neighborhood. Then, all of the sudden, I see something fly across an opening in the trees. Then another.
BATS!
There were so many of them!! That was so cool. I have a natural pest control thing going on here.. lizards and bats. It's just neat.
Of course, I've seen rats in my garden, which I don't appreciate too much. I'm really hoping they don't find a way into my house. That would just ruin the whole 'love for the critters' thing I have going on right now. Cute as they are with their chubby little brown bodies.. I don't like the idea of them near my house.
Oh well. I guess I will have to keep an eye out.
