So President Obama is not going to be at Arlington on Memorial Day, instead he will be visiting another veteran's cemetery in Illinois. He is going to be in Illinois because he and his family are going back to Chicago for the first time since February 2009. Vice President Biden will be handling ceremonies at Arlington in his stead.
This is apparently a horrible, horrible thing and further proof that Obama hates America and especially our troops. Or something. Unsurprisingly, I don't buy it.
1. Other presidents (Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush) have not been in attendance at Arlington for various reasons. According to this data that makes Clinton the must super-patriotic of the recent presidents. Good job, Willy!
2. I've been to Arlington. It is an amazing experience, the atmosphere hard to describe, but words like "hallowed" and "sacred" come to mind. I have also been to
Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, and it was infused with exactly the same atmosphere. I feel it is incredibly disrespectful to all who have served to rank one of their resting places above any other.
3. From
this article: ay Agg, communications director for AMVETS, a veterans service organization, said "this really is a nonissue," calling a lot of the outrage "politically motivated."
"It really does seem odd to me that such a big deal is being made out of this because he is going to a national cemetery to observe the holiday in Illinois. Bush sent Cheney to a Veterans Day event in DC," Agg said.
In conclusion,
have a Snopes article debunking a lot of this, and as we all know Snopes is the most trusted name on the internet. FACT IT.
