The Prop 8 Trial: some nattering

Jan 15, 2010 12:45

I keep feeling like I need to filter this stuff, for so many reasons. Compared to the unimaginable horror happening right now in Haiti, I feel guilty for focusing so much of my attention on these proceedings. Even if that weren't going on I'd be hesitant to post about it because I just...don't really do a lot of serious discussion here.

Plus I know I'm offending/annoying/cluttering the flist for a few of you, and for a number of you I am preaching to the choir. These are the things I worry about. But I also feel passionately about the subject of LGBT equality so...yeah.

I've been following Courage Campaign's Prop 8 Trial Tracker and the coverage on Firedog Lake, both of which have been offering fantastic and insightful blog entries along with invaluable transcripts of the proceedings. These transcripts are all we have to go by, as so far the defense has been successful in preventing video coverage of the trial. It is up to the internet to spread the word and try and encourage the discourse which should be happening in a public forum, instead of (ironically) keeping it in the closet.

Choice Reading:
* The "Private Hell" of An Inauthentic Life by Teddy Partridge, which discusses the day-to-day impact of concealing one's orientation. I'm closeted at work, so it strikes close to home.
* Homophobia on Trial, at long, long last.
* Legal Experts Weigh In On the Supreme Court Banning Cameras and What Do They Have To Hide?, both of which discuss the broadcast muzzle. Personally I find it appalling that we got endless coverage of OJ Simpson but now we suddenly can't put clips of a civil rights trial on YouTube.
* "Mommy, When I Grow Up Can I Get Domestic Partnered?" - and my love for Teddy Partridge grows: "Not only might your schoolmates mock you and your family reject you, but forget about all those dreams of living happily ever after. That’s not for you people."

...screw it, I'm not even cutting this. I've done enough scrolling in my LJ life, time for someone else to do it.

oh snap public post, this country makes me tired, queerness, people are all so stupid, humanitarianism, navel gazing for fun and profit, politics
