A trend I've noticed in "modern rock" type music that sort of drives me nuts is people singing songs that are ... subtly explicit (is that a total oxymoron?) about sex acts. It started with that Nickelback song: "I like your pants around your feet / I like the dirt that's on your knees / I like the way you still say 'please' / while you're lookin' up at me / you're like my favorite damn disease". It goes on to discuss a bunch of other things, including the way that Chad Kroger loves "the white stains on your dress".
There have probably been some between when that single was released and now, but on K-Rock this summer I've noticed a couple others: "Bad Girlfriend" by Theory of a Deadman, which describes a naughty "party girl" type that the singer is presumably dating, and how those qualities about her make her a "bad girlfriend". But apparently he doesn't want to break up with her because he benefits from said naughtiness.
There's also some "Addicted" song, by a band called Saving Abel. Some lyrics: "I'm so addicted to / all the things you do / when you're going down on me / in between the sheets". Reading the rest of the lyrics, this song appears to be about a guy in a relationship with someone he doesn't really care about anymore, but the sex is so good he sticks around.
I enjoy these tunes to a degree--a lot of modern rock/alternative music, even the commercial stuff, still holds an appeal for me--but what really irritates me is the response to lyrics like these.
They're not very deep. They're not terribly meaningful. They're just about fucking. People like to get drunk and sing along loudly to them. I know this from personal experience. Haha.
And the fact that the songs are merely about fucking is what makes everybody love them. Because singing about sex is soooo controversial and no one has ever done THAT before.
Come on.
I could also analyze these songs through my "feminist lens", but I haven't the energy for that right now. :P
