20. My Year of Meats by Ruth L. Ozeki -

This was a gift from phuzzydee from about a million years ago, so I figured it was about time I read it. Hah. :) (Thanks, Dee!)

It's been a little while since I read this, but basically: Jane Takagi-Little, a Japanese-American woman, is invited by a Japanese television station to work on their series My American Wife!, which showcases an American family every week, and a recipe involving (preferably) beef. The purpose is to get the Japanese to purchase more beef in hopes of emulating these seemingly perfect families. Along the way, Jane discovers sinister truths about the meat industry, and shifts gears a bit. Also follows the stories of other characters in the book, most notably Akiko Ueno, who is the miserable wife of the guy in charge of the show's advertising.

I really liked this book. It was by turns funny, sad, touching, and gross/shocking. A nice combination. :)

21. Stardust by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Charles Vess -

My first Neil Gaiman book! I liked this story (and the way it was written) a lot, and the illustrations were lovely.

I suck at book reviews. And I failed dismally at the fifty book challenge! Haha. Well, I read more, and that's a good thing. ;)

I'm doing this again in 2008, and I'm already in the middle of three different books. Be on the lookout for more crappy write-ups!!
