Ahh you are on a mac, that makes this a little easier lol So am I :) I don't know what help I can be but will give it a go.

This is what I use.

For ripping - Handbrake

Though you may not need to worry about ripping if you can get the converting right. I find this program a little bit of a pain for series or getting subs off it. I've heard Mactheripper is the best.

For converting I use a couple of different ones, depending if I want playback on my iPod or DVD player. Codecs are basically the encoding, different video types (.avi, .mkv etc.) need different ones to playback fine. (I think I explained that right lol)

Give Smart converter a try, its in the app store.

I use the free version, I've never needed to upgrade to pro. It will actually indicate on how fast or slow it will take to convert. It will only convert what needs to be converted. So if its going to be slow, the video and audio need to be converted.

or

Total Video Converter Lite (Yeah, I hate paying for apps I rarely use lol)

This one is more advanced in the settings, allowing you to change a lot of stuff. But good if you want a specific file type, like .avi.

Good luck! Hope this helps :)
