Yesterday was such a crazy day. I spend from 8AM till 2PM dealing with one particular problem for one employee. At one point, I had this sinking sensation like I was in a tank of water and the water was slowly rising above my head. (I totally understand the phrase “in over my head” and “sink or swim”) But at the end of the day, we figured everything out and I can’t tell you how much I learned. It was one of those highly technical problems that usually the HRIS Manager would take care of. Well, since I am the only HRIS person (just a Specialist) here now, it fell on my shoulders. I had to learn quickly within an hour how to write sequel statements, submit them to DBA’s, and to run ALPAY16 reports. We had a terminated high level employee purge in our system and we still owed him several scheduled severance payments. Our payroll was processing in the afternoon, and his check HAD to be in that pay run. So I had to figure out how to un-purge him on the back end of database. Gah!
I’m glad I got this crisis almost a year after my old manager left because at this point, I’m very familiar with the different tables in our system this touched & how it will flow over to Payroll. I wouldn’t have known all this 10 months ago. Even though I spent most the day feeling like a complete idiot, it ended with me feeling accomplished. I didn’t go running to my boss for help. I rolled up my sleeves (and maybe pulled out a little hair) and cranked up the brain volume. It is the first time I feel like I can really step into my old manager’s shoes. It makes me feel a little more justified for my job title change request. I’ve asked for my title to be changed from HRIS Specialist to HRIS Administrator to more aptly describe my actual duties.
(big sigh) Now I just have to get through the rest of this week. PT Appointments, Chiro appt, taking Mac to store for repair, voice lesson, attend two parties, attend 12 hours of class, write a grant proposal letter, unpack a few more boxes, make Valentine’s Day desert and work a 40 hours week. J At least I’m not bored!
