In the past few, well I could say weeks but really it's only been days, I have gone through a slew of books. This is partly because I can't help devouring books in one or two sittings, and partly because I call my habit "research".
You see, I love to write as well and have a silly dream of being a published author. Reading voraciously helps me figure out what works and what doesn't, and what I'd like to see more of in my books. So far I've written two, but the second taught me loads and I must go back and edit the crap out of the first one.
I'm thinking that might be my next project since I'm a bit burnt out by the characters in my second novel. That would be the third reason why I've been reading so much. I needed some distance from Riesa, Connor, and the gang to keep them from giving me so many "what ifs" on what happens next. I'm just not ready to go on with them yet, despite my wicked devotion to them.
So, on to the books. "Hush, Hush". In many ways the set up is similar to "Twilight". Girl gets hot, dangerous bio partner who wants to kill her. Instead of killing her, the guy falls for her. I must say though, I loved "Twilight" for a reason, and went through "Hush, Hush" in under 24 hours. In a quote I stole from somewhere I can't remember, "Angels are the new vampires", and the angel in "Hush, Hush" wears it well. It was one of those "Don't put me down" books, and I'm looking forward to the second one. Heck, now I've got my own angel novel running around in my head.
Another recent read is "Strange Angels". Not about angels surprisingly, but about a sort of vampire slayer. It's told in first person and the narrative is often fragmatic and repetitive, but the style works. Dru, the main character, has just been thrust into a horrific situation, and the only way she can deal is by repeating things her dad taught her before he became zombified and she had to kill him. It's a fabulous way to get into her head and hear her voice. Of course, I've asked for its sequel "Betrayals" for Christmas.
Until next time, keep reading.
