Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - my views - SPOILERS

May 22, 2011 21:53

Okay. I've seen it twice now. once in 3D and once regular.

I have to say 3D is overrated. Not necessary in my opinion so I'll save the $3 for future viewings of the movie. And yes, I will go again!

I LOVED it! To me, it was more like the first movie - CotBP than 2 & 3. More Jack acting like the Jack I adored! Wily and slippery.

The movie is "loosely" based on the novel of the same name. I read the novel last year. I could have seen it being a pre-quel to CotBP, but they found a way to make it a sequel to 3. The book deals with Blackbeard, the Fountain of Youth and voodoo... all of which find their way into the movie. I think they did a good job. I know they mainly purchased the rights to the book because they liked the title, but they did manage to put a bit of it in the movie.

What I liked about the movie:

Jack! This is the Jack I fell in love with in 1. Crazy, cunning, crafty... unpredictable. He improvises - or does he? I really enjoyed the Jack-Barbossa scenes. Those two just work well on  screen. Barbossa makes such a great pirate, although for most of the movie, he's a privateer working for King George.

Speaking of King G -- OMG! The actor that played him -- PERFECT! The escape scene from the palace was delightful.

You do learn a lot more about Jack in this movie - he has few loyalties, but still has the "good" streak. His loyalty is to friends, and his one good friend is Gibbs. He loves the Pearl (we all knew that), and women are more of an encumbrance. He enjoys them, but never trusts them. That is so evidenced in the final scene when he strands Angelica and takes off with Gibbs. And Jack Loves... JACK! LOL  I LOVED that last line on the island with Angelica - she tells him "I love you"... Jack's reply "I do too!" He doesn't mean he loves her, but that he loves himself.

Overall, the movie was about trust, lies, betrayal and loyalties.  A lovely mix of action sequence, silly Jack-ness and a nice side story with the mermaid.

What I didn't like:

1. Angelica. Seriously? More her costume than anything else. I don't like the actress, but .. that's who they picked so deal with it. her character is important in this tale in terms of the interactions between Jack and Blackbeard. I just wish, with all their costumey wonderfulness -- such original outfits for Jack, Barbossa... all the other pirates in this movie... couldn't they have come up with something more original? Her costume looked 100% ren faire pirate wench. Give me 30 minutes at a faire and I can find at least 10 chicks dressed like that ... and could hit 2-3 shops and find clothes to pretty much match. SO unoriginal! UGH!

2. The music. Nothing really new except the mermaid music. Everything else was simply rehashed from 1, 2 & 3. There was a nice flair of Spanish guitars mixed into some of the themes, but they needed to really work on that music in my opinion.
