“Here I brought muffins…Banana and chocolate!” Aiba announced looking around the little family that he had been almost living with for the last month. It had been a traumatising time them all but slowly they were beginning to readjust themselves. Nino was looking more confident with the twins who in turn where looking more confident in him. There were still tears from all three of them and more often than not Nino appeared to want to pull his hair out but they were pulling themselves together as a family and that was the main thing. At that moment though the twins looked up at him in surprise their eyes growing wide and fearful while they looked at each before saying together;
“Muffins? For breakfast…We can’t have them for breakfast…Mummy wouldn’t let us!”
“I think that just for today it will be okay, ne? Uncle Masaki brought them for us…So we should eat them…” Nino whispered his voice sounding strained and Aiba could understand why. It was always a battle now to get the twins to do something that their mummy wouldn’t have let them. Since Nino wasn’t physic and very clearly a lot more relaxed than his ex-wife had been he was hearing it almost every day and it always ended up the same way with the twins bursting into tears and storming off into their bedroom and Nino sinking over the table with his head in his hands. He was growing more confidence but it was slow and each time something like that happened his confidence snapped back.
“But mummy…”
“Please…Your mum would understand that you can have a little treat on a weekend ne? You have healthy breakfasts every other day…” Nino said trying to be strong but his voice was already shaking and it sounded as if he was close to begging the twins. The pair looked at each other again as if speaking to one another with their eyes before they nodded slowly whispering;
“Mummy wouldn’t mind just one…”
“…No…She wouldn’t…” Nino whispered in relief as the children took the muffins and began eating them. The smile on his boyfriend’s face lifted Aiba’s heart and he gave a smile of his own stroking the back of his neck with his fingertips before frowning when the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it Kazu-chan…You eat! You’re as thin as a scarecrow!” He said holding his boyfriend down and very lightly dropping a kiss down onto the mane of black hair that appeared to have not been brushed since the funeral a month ago. It was difficult for him he knew that but while he had gained more confidence with the twins he was starting to take less care of himself. Aiba didn’t mind that so much as he was more than prepared to look after his Nino. He headed over to the door giving a smile as he pulled it open surprised when he was presented with Rii’s sister. They had met at the funeral when she had grilled him about his relationship with Nino. He hadn’t liked her then and he didn’t like her anymore now when she looked at him like he was something that she had stepped in. Without so much as a word in greeting she swept into the room on full speed and stormed to the table her hands on her hips and a scowl in her face as she growled;
“Muffins for breakfast?”
“Yes…And good morning to you too…” Nino replied dryly not looking up from his own muffin that he had ripped into pieces instead of eating and Aiba clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth closing the door with a click and heading over to the coffee pot.
“May I make you a drink?” He asked determined to stay as bright and polite as possible but he couldn’t deny that his eyes were watching her every movement knowing that if she said anything that could hurt Nino he would have something to say about it.
“Just a simple orange juice thank-you…I don’t pollute my body with coffee…” She answered in a waspish tone and Aiba was very tempted to pour the coffee pot over her head more so when he had noticed that the twins had stopped eating their muffins with guilty expressions on their faces. Biting hard on his tongue he took the bottle of orange juice from the fridge and poured her a glass well aware that she was watching his each and every movement. “You seem to know your way around…”
“Masaki has been helping me out, I wouldn’t have been able to cope this last month without him…” Nino said flashing him a smile that almost made the woman’s attitude worth it and Aiba smiled in response handing her over a glass of orange juice. The woman took it with a scowl and put it on the table without even drinking it as she declared;
“Ah that brings me to the reason I’m here…I’m taking the children…”
“What?” Both Nino and the twins shouted out while Aiba managed a gasp of disbelief staring at the woman as though she had lost her mind. She drew herself up to her full height her chest heaving a little.
“I have thought it over for the last month and I honestly think that it is the best option…I am sure that it was what my sister would have wanted…” She said her every word filling Aiba with more and more anger and he could tell from the expression that was flittering over Nino’s face that he was feeling the same but there was also the possibility that Nino would agree. It had been hard on him this last month “You don’t want the responsibility of children whereas I am more than capable and I believe that...”
“Get out…” Nino growled his fists clenching on the table his eyes on his children that were huddled together tears streaming down their faces and instantly Aiba went to them picking them up in his arms and holding them against his chest as the woman managed to look completely surprised by Nino’s words as she spluttered;
“Excuse me?”
“Get out…Now please…” Nino growled again getting to his feet his eyes narrowing at her as his mouth twisted into a bitter scowl “They are my children and according to her own will Rii-chan wanted me to have them…Get out now…”
