Nino was a little embarrassed as he left the bedroom following behind Satoshi. Sho was sitting on the sofa his phone against his ear talking in soft tones to Masaki. He looked up at him with a smile as he came through and Nino knew his cheeks would be even redder than in the picture Satoshi had drawn. At that thought he looked for the sketch book he had dropped on the floor earlier. It was no where to be seen and Nino imagined a flustered Satoshi picking it up and putting it away.
“Yes, he’s fine, his phone died, and he couldn’t remember your number, that’s all Masaki…He’s a little bit sick because he didn’t have his pills but otherwise he’s fine…You can talk to him yourself if you want…” Sho hummed trying to speak over the hyperactive babble that his friend was letting out. Masaki was a worrier. He’d known that since he was 7 years old and had talked to a creepy stranger that always hung around the park. Masaki had always been bigger than him and looked older given his size and when he had seen Nino talking to the strange man he had flown into a rage so loud that every mother and father at the park had come over. The sight they had found was Masaki sitting on top of a full-grown adult slapping his face with his hands.
Nino found out later that the man was guilty of taking another kid from another block a few weeks later. He shuddered to think what would have happened if Masaki hadn’t been his protective self which was why, instead of being annoyed he was genuinely sorry for worrying his friend and immediately started apologising when he was handed the phone;
“Masaki, I’m really sorry. I meant to call but…”
“I was so worried about the pair of you!” Masaki shouted cutting off his apology mid-sentence. Nino had already expected it and had pulled the phone away from his ear, so he wouldn’t be deafened by the blast. In the background he could hear his friend’s dog yapping, obviously thinking his master was in some kind of danger, and Nino bowed his head low even though he knew that he couldn’t see him. “The snow got so bad that I freaked out that you had slipped on the road or ended up in a ditch! I don’t mind if you’re getting along and having a good night but don’t freak me out again!”
“I’m really sorry Masaki. I promise I’ll charge my phone…”
“It doesn’t matter if you do! You’re always playing those stupid mobile games that drain power! Who cares if there is a pica-prat nearby?” Masaki continued to rage for another five minutes and then finally sighed and recovered himself. “Okay, I’m glad you’re okay, and I gave Sho-chan your medicine. In future make sure you take it properly!”
“Yes, sire, thanks Masaki, I love you” Nino grinned not seeing the jealous looks that both Sho and Satoshi sent him from their positions on either side of him.
“I know you do, I love you too! Have fun with Ohno-san!” Masaki was giggling as Nino handed the phone back to Sho and turned to look at Satoshi. The man was leaning against his countertop with his arms crossed over his chest his eyes narrowed. He flashed him a flushed smile and then scratched at the back of his neck surprised when Satoshi spoke it with a rough tone.
“Perhaps I should ask you about your relationship with Aiba…”
“He’s my best friend, pretty much my brother, he’s over protective and has been since…” Nino stopped speaking his cheek growing ever redder when he saw that Sho had ended his call and was looking at him. “Since I was seven. Does it matter. You are such a pain in the ass sometimes, Satoshi”
“What happened when you were seven?”
“Urgh, some creepy guy at the park. I was talking to him and Masaki raised the alarm and hit him. A week later the creep got another kid” Nino sighed a little completely unsure why they were so interested in this “The kid was found safe. At least that’s what my mum told me at the time, but I think that it’s obvious what happened to him. So, yeah, I love Masaki”
“I see…”
“He was a hero even then” Sho chuckled and Nino grinned at the way Sho’s eyes lit up, his lips twisting into a fond smile.
“Yup, a really cute one” He chuckled remembering the way Masaki had slid down the slide and coming flying towards him and the man. His eyes had been sparking with anger and his fists were clenched so tight that Nino knew that if he had been able to he would have punched the man’s head right from his shoulders. As it was he had only managed to punch him in the genitals knock him to the floor. “Best friend I could ever hope to have”
“It seems that way, I’m sorry” Satoshi mumbled from behind him and Nino gave a little dismissive shrug.
“It’s okay but I’m tired of you always thinking I’m shagging everybody. I’m not a fucking slut” He growled going over to the sofa and dropping down into it with his hand resting over his stomach and his head resting on the back or the sofa. Sho made a small noise and then shuffled out leaving them alone. Nino frowned staring out of the window at the snow. It truly did look magical and beautiful under the snow. So much more so than dirty streets and people hurrying around.
“I’m sorry, I’m not completely used to trusting people” Satoshi sighed coming to kneel in front of him. His head was bowed, and Nino could see that he was chewing hard on his tongue. His cheeks were coloured with a deep flush of red and Nino sighed.
“What happened to you?” He mumbled slowly, mostly to himself, wishing he could read his mind and find out what was going on in his mind. It was so completely confusing that he couldn’t put a finger of it. “You said that everyone just wants money…And…You don’t trust people…” Nino was thinking about the way Satoshi had hissed the word Him. He had thought that Sho had had a tragic love affair that turned rotten but now he suspected that it was Satoshi. “Did somebody hurt you?”
“…” Ohno didn’t make more than a sound looking up at him for a long time before rolling his shoulders in a shrug. “Yes, but it doesn’t matter, I will try and remember that you’re not him and I won’t judge you as such”
“Thank-you…”
