The Midwife part 4

“How’d it go?” Etsuko asked with a smile when he came home and she was just about to go to the hospital. She was already dressed in her grey outfit with the white collar. It wasn’t a warm day, even if the rain had blown itself out while he had been with Mari, and there was a darker grey cardigan her black coat as extra protection against the chill. Unlike last night her hair was tidy around her face fixed into a bun at the base of her neck. Nino grinned and wrapped his arms around her tightly his nose and mouth pressing into her neck as her arms came around him tightly more supporting him to stay upright than hugging him and Nino chuckled his eyes closing as he tried to remember the feelings that had been inside of him when he had brought the new life into the world.

“It was amazing, the baby was the wrong way but I managed to get her turned…She was so tiny” He said in happy almost drunken rush and Etsuko laughed a little more than patted him on his back to let him know that she had to be released so that she could be on her way.

“That good, huh? I’m glad you should probably head to bed, now though ne?”

“I doubt if I can get much sleep” He sighed knowing that he was far too wired and excitable for that. Etsuko gave another chuckle and then pressed her lips to his cheek saying softly;

“Try, you’re on call again tonight and you won’t be much good to anyone if you’re falling to sleep. There’s food on the counter and I set the alarm for 3” Etsuko sighed and then checked her watch and sighed “I’ve gotta go, I’ll see you later”

“Yup, thanks Etsuko” Nino gave his girlfriend another squeezing hug and then kissed her once on the mouth before going up the stairs and opening the door to their apartment. The warmth of the place rushed around him snugly like a warm and familiar blanket and he happily toed off his shoes and made his way to the kitchen area. The breakfast was the one and only dish that his girlfriend could cook well, Etsuko was incredible in many ways but cooking had never been a forte, but she had always managed to get omelettes to be better than anyone he knew. He smiled when he saw it knowing that she would have had to get up earlier than needed to cook it for him. He poured himself a coffee and the plate of food before going to the chair he had been sitting in.

The fashion magazine had been closed but SakurAiba stared out at him from the cover. A weird sensation coiled around in his stomach for a moment as he looked at the handsome faces and the way that they were holding each other. It wasn’t sexual, not really, Aiba part of the pair was in front with Sakurai’s arms wrapped around him from behind, but the ease of it coupled with the genuine smiles made it seem a lot more natural than any of the pictures he had with Etsuko. His mood from earlier having completely blown away at the sight he growled and rolled his eyes slowly before flipping it over so that he was looking at an ad for a cooking magazine and then turned his attention to the food in front of him.

The omelette was as good as they always were and it was only a matter of moments before he had finished it and the coffee. He blinked down at the empty plate and then yawned audibly his bones sapped of all energy now and he left the cup and plate on the table before stumbling to the bedroom. The sheets were still rumpled from where Etsuko had been laid and he flopped down onto her side of the bed and hugged her pillow. Her scent clung to the fabric, warm and comforting and he used it to allow himself to drift into a deep and pleasant sleep his last thought being of the new baby Matsumoto and how amazing it had been.
