New Beginnings final

Masaki was sombre as they drove to the place where they would be scattering his grandfather’s ashes. It was indeed a sombre occasion but they had made love again that morning and Sho was almost positive that even in such sad times he was sure that he couldn’t ever be happier. After coming to a stop he lightly gripped at Masaki’s hand.

“Are you okay?”

“…I’m just sad…” Masaki admitted giving him a sad expression as if to prove his point “…Driving around I keep remembering your grandpa and I can’t help but wonder if…If he would have approved of us?”

“…Masaki…He acted as our matchmaker…” Sho breathed knowing that although he knew very little of his grandfather in the last few years of his life he truly believed that the old man had wanted to set him up with Masaki. It was as though in his final moments he had found the most perfect person in the world for him and made it so that they would have to get to know each other. “…He made that clause so that we would have to meet and he had to have known that…That meeting you and spending any kind of time with you…He would have to have known that I would fall in love with you…”

“When did you fall in love with me?” Masaki asked and Sho lightly rolled his eyes his cheeks flushing just a little as he started to drive again making sure to drive carefully around the bends of the steep hills glad that he was sitting the side he was and not near the drop.

“…I think…It’s embarrassing but I think it’s when I read those workbooks, when you were learning how to read and write…You were so cute…” He admitted and Masaki let out a loud cry which filled the car as he demanded;

“Eh?! How did you find them!”

“…They were in the drawer of my grandfather’s study…He kept them in there with some other personal things…”

“Eh?! They weren’t meant to be in there! I left them in my bedroom…I can’t even remember when I last saw them!” Masaki announced and Sho gave a breath rolling his eyes as he realised for sure that Shu had manipulated them both and their relationship far more than he could ever have imagined. For some reason he wasn’t angry at the old man for doing so, if anything he felt like crying realising for certain that the old man really had cared about him and probably hadn’t cared that he was gay. “Turn here Sho-chan…” Masaki whispered and Sho did as he was told turning onto another road before pulling into a layby which over looked the very same valley in which he and his grandfather had spent so many happy times exploring “This…This is where Shu-chan would always come first…He would stand and then sit here for ages with a smile on his face this was the last place that we came to…Before his health was too bad…”

“This…This is where I came with him as a child…We would stand here and point to where we would explore…” Sho breathed getting out of the car with tears fully in his eyes now and Masaki came to join him against the railings. Together they looked out over the beautiful multi-coloured landscape and listened to the roaring of a waterfall that was hidden by a tree.

“This is where he should be ne? Looking out over this?”

“Yes…This was where he was happiest…” Sho agreed blinking away the tears and going to the car. On the back seat was the urn that held his grandfather’s ashes. For a moment a strange feeling curled up inside of him but he pushed it away and picked it up carrying it to Masaki who was standing gripping the railing with his eyes closed and tears rolling down his cheeks. Sho popped open the lid of the urn and whispered “Should be say a few words?”

“…Shu-san…Thank-you…” Masaki whispered taking a handful of the ashes and then throwing them into the air. “Be happy in the place you loved…”

“…Thank-you for loving us both enough to give us our new beginning together…”

THE END
