New Beginnings part 86

Sho threw open the door to the cottage smiling at the rush of warmth and the slight scent of cleaning products that came with it. The cottage hadn’t changed in the years between his last visit and he looked around eagerly at the polished wooden table set beside the window that looked out onto the front garden and the slope which led up to the road that was virtually impossible to see. He could remember his grandfather teaching him to play dominoes in the evenings at the table before curling in the reclining chair in front of the blackened fire place. The steep steps which led up to the two bedrooms looked as dangerous as ever and the frayed carpet into the extension sitting room gave the place a homely feel. He had been sad to hear from the owner that she would be giving up the place after this last year but he had been more than happy when Masaki had shown an interest in buying it from her. There was a lot that they would have to do to keep it from falling into the stream but they had the money to spend and for both of them it would be a way of showing their respects to Shu.

“Wow! It never changes ne!” Masaki cried echoing his thoughts cheerfully as he came into the cottage behind him carrying his suitcase and Sho nodded in agreement his eyes going to the visitors book on the side. There was a collection their now but he could still see the leather bound book that he and his grandfather had written in on their first visit. His heart in his mouth he walked over to the side table on which they were stored and flipped open the book, the yellowing pages crinkling at his touch as nostalgic feelings washed over him. Inside numerous travellers, couples, families, and singles had all written their thoughts over the years and it took some time to roll back the years before finding his entry. It was written in very careful English with the pen so deeply pushed into the paper that it looked as if it were engraved and his lips twitched at the sight of it ‘Thank-you for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage…The waterfall was nice…There are a lot of sheep’ “Shu-san…He read that entry straight away too…Sho-chan…I don’t know exactly what happened between you but…I think he did love you…In his way…”

“…It has taken me a long time to accept that…” Sho breathed with a nod as he flipped the book closed and turned to look at his boyfriend who was standing awkwardly in the middle of the room his eyes filled with something akin to tears. “…We’ll never know what he was thinking but…I think…At least I hope that he cared about me…”

“He did…I know that he did…” Masaki nodded blinking determinedly and Sho gave a smile taking his suitcase from him and saying;

“I’ll put his in the bedroom…You should make a drink and we can plan what we’re going to do tomorrow, ne?”

“Okay! We can sit in the bird room watching the stream!” Masaki nodded enthusiastically heading into the kitchen to make the drink while Sho trudged upstairs with the two suitcases his heart in his mouth a little. He thought about putting either his or Masaki’s in the lower room which held the two neatly made single beds but then thought against it completing the journey up the last five steps and putting them both in the double bedroom. His heart did a funny jump as he looked at the brass bed imagining himself and Masaki inside of it later before he squished it down feeling like a horny child. “Sho-chan! There’s a kingfisher! Come see!”

A/N: I hope that this is okay…Sho’s entry was actually my brother’s entry in the visitor’s book when he was only 5 years old XD
