the last couple of days were somewhat monotonous (wake up go to school etc) so i didn't post.
last night i went out to the bar and (soberly!) twisted my ankle when stepping down off a high step - it's particularly sore and slightly swollen. at the time i thought i broke something, but it's not nearly bruised enough for that to be the case.
this is particularly pertinent cause today was walking history tour of sydney day.
we first walked to the Powerhouse Museum, which i can't really explain the theme of as there doesn't seem to be one. There was a lot of Aussie history, as well as things like modern engineering, innovation, worldwide fashion "discoveries", transportation developments, science fair stuff, kids sections, etc. we were there to see the Aboriginal exhibit - but it was damaged by water. so we spent an hour and a half putzing around which was more than enough to see what i needed to see. I made a point of going to only Australia-specific exhibits so I can take in as much as possible. I also felt guilty not to, as it was a school field trip.
We then cabbed it over to the Australian Museum, where they have an Aboriginal Australian exhibit there. pretty neat & super informative. LOTS of pictures of REALLY fricken cool art to show when i get home. if you ever get the chance to see the art of Kev Butler - DO IT. ho-LY.
then we walked to the Rocks. on the way we ran into the Calgary Dance Team or something like that. I heard the country music from quite a distance away, and no joke, they were line dancing /jazz/tap/square dancing as well. i don't know what they were doing there, but it was quite amusing.
saw the landmark of where "that one scene from the matrix, you know the one" was filmed..though it wasn't particularly spectacular for me, as i've in fact, NOT seen the matrix ;)
we arrived at the rocks, which is not nearly as rocky as i had anticipated. it was a 1h45 walking tour of the area know as the Rocks which is a really historical place including the old Chinatown, prisons, settler's cottages, pubs etc. there's one strip of road that is the original wood it was build with (they laid it like brick). we saw the bridge clearly and got the deets about the bridgeclimb, learned about the first settlers, etc. you may not know, but australia was originally serving the purpose of a large prison for British convicts as there was not any more room for them in the British prisons. Apparently, lot of shame was previously associated with convict ancestry by current-day australians, but post bicentennial (1988 i believe) they are much more accepting of this past.
Then we headed home, at which point I proceeded to crash on the couch. nice. :)
I've found that I'm not really tired ever, I can sleep 4-6 hours a night and be fine. I think it's the adrenaline keeping me going!
Heaps of pics from today- hopefully can catch up on my fotolog, though at this rate i'm going to be posting photos well into next year!
Tomorrow should be a work day - readings to catch up on (already) and a paper to hopefully write by weekend-end.
Also think we're going to have a movie night in res (err...our apt?) one night - set up a DVD on my widescreen laptop and just sorta veg.
Oh - and apparently winter is just getting started..it will get colder through the end of July and start to warm up a bit through August. brr! I'm definitely appreciating not being in the Toronto heat though! Plus - the cool weather is probably more manageable than if I were here during an Aussie summer.
oh ! another thing to remember if you ever come here. apparently there's a hole in the ozone above us - so even on very cold & cloudy days in the winter you can get quite sunburned - as I did today. ALWAYS wear sunscreen and protect your skin! it's the only one you'll have. ;)
that's it for now - I think i'm off to bed soon.
xo,
Krysta
