What's The Difference...

Between a button and a picture of a button?

A recent anecdote on notalwaysright.com has an IT person finally figuring out, after fifteen minutes of trouble-shooting over the phone with someone, that rather than following the illustrated directions they were emailed, they were actually clicking ON the screenshots they were sent.

That is not an isolated incident, in my experience (although the story treats it as though it were). A few months ago Rogers revamped the instruction sheets we send out showing how to do everything from creating an email address to setting up the wifi on the modem/routers, and part of that revamp was to remove the screenshots they used to have in there, because people will try and click on the instructions instead of doing what it says on the computer every damned time.

Seriously, it's such a regular thing that when I have to walk them through the illustrated instructions to get them linked to a certain type of support, I make a point of asking if the buttons depress when they click them, or if the arrow changes to a hand when they hover over it, or if the button they're clicking on has a great big "1" next to it. As in, "Step 1."

Because, hilariously, a lot of people are just that dumb.
